Woohoo and hooyah! Congratulations, Baz, on achieving a ONE million meter rowing season! We wish you many, MANY more!

PS - I would bet that the Mongol Rally is a physical challenge. You'll have to be in some pretty good shape to easily endure some of the driving conditions (so will the vehicle). SPOT goes to the Steppes?! Cool !

Grats on the scores! We seem to be doing fairly similar (you got your erg a week or so before mine, you row a bit more too, and you're older, etc etc), but still similar :) I was very excited when I broke 7k on the 30 minutes, and rowed my first 2k yesterday (and broke 8 minutes). I'm done with PBs for a bit though, as I need to work on bettering my technique (and slow down my stroke rate as well as increase my power) before attempting to see if I can raise my heart rate a bit further still. My personal bests have left me panting and barely able to sleep on the nights I set them at.

I've been doing more stretching (as well as some sit ups as suggested, but I do suck at them and could barely get to 20 of them) and while my back muscles are still VERY tense today, at least I know it's a muscle pain that I've been having so that's a bit less worrying for me.

What makes me the happiest though, is that the scale has informed me that I weigh under 200 lbs for the last 5 days in a row. While I haven't lost enough weight (12 lbs or so) to win the "biggest loser" competition at work that I'm part of, I'm doing pretty good (one coworker has lost over 25 lbs already since July 25th according to his twin brother, who won the competition that ended earlier this year). Another month and a half to go, which should hopefully net me another 5 to 10 lbs (190 lbs being my ultimate target weight, but I don't really care when I hit it, if ever). :?

Congrats. Great work!
Although I want to be in the top half of online rankings in 60-69 LW, I am mostly interested in racing against my own stats, bettering my times and distances each month. I also see that technique is the main thing. So many small nuances.
I do warmup and stretch before every row, and I know that helps. Lost 22 lbs since July 7th and my BP is 112/72. Feeling healthy and I wouldn't trade that for any numbers.
My goal is to knock 1 full second off my 2000m times each month till I reach 7:45. And to add 20m each month to my 30 min. row till I reach 7500m. We'll see...
Cheers.

Thanks, and would be a great trip. Janet and I have discussed going overland from Korea to London via Russia previously and I think when the time comes we'll do it in our four-wheel drive! If only I wasn't working....

Good work on the PBs!

If you haven’t had a chance yet, take a look at the 2,000m training programs on the C2 website under training. I’ve often followed this and it will definitely improve your times. Chapter 5 deals with preset training programs.

Our kayak coach used to chant a mantra of ‘if you want to go fast, you need to train fast’.

There are a couple of different programs, the one I like best and would suggest is the ‘Interactive 2,000m Training Program’. I’ll leave you to read the detail, but over a 26 week cycle it will take you through a periodised approach of light, medium, and hard workouts in three week blocks, starting with endurance and building into speed later. Earlier rows in the program are longer at lower heart rates, building to very short sprints at anaerobic threshold levels later in the program. It is also categorised to suit those of differing fitness levels from highly trained, to beginners. And that is the beauty of it.

A couple of complete cycles of this program (2 x 26 weeks) and I’ll be surprised if you haven’t made substantial gains. Two years ago I was working hard to do just under eight minutes, and I have taken that to sub 7 minutes (although would need a bex and a lie down at the moment if I tried!)

Another benefit of high intensity rowing, which comes later in the cycle, is that it is very efficient at burning fat. You may not row for long in some of those sessions, but they are very effective. It should be combined with a good diet of healthy foods, plenty of carbs for energy, and protein for muscle, and you may even find yourself eating more, not less.

Good luck with it, keeps us updated, and rest assured the 'Luna-tics' will support you all the way!

Cheers, BBB

Congratulations Baz :!:
Looking for a challenge :?: Check out the "Death Race" held every summer in Pittsfield, Vt. It draws endurance athletes form around the world. Only a small percentage finish. The indivdual challenges change every year and it combines mental as well as physical challenges. This year it included carrying a six foot log over rough terrain, including going a significant distance in a stream. When you are already physcically exhausted they through a mental challenge in. In one of the mental challenges this year they had to memorize and recite a long Bible verse.
In the past some of the more successful entrants have military backgrounds. Last year I think the winner was from the British SAS.
I'm getting tired just thinking about it.

Sounds rather gruelling and the sort of thing an SAS type would do well at. We are looking at Speights Coast to Coast in New Zealand...

I was traveling through Pennsylvania and saw the exit for the Moon. I was surprised to find out how close to Pittsburgh it is. I thought we had erged much further than that.

Yes, I erged today, but don't get excited. I'm not really back. My river (the Housatonic) is in the flood stage right now, so it is not safe to row. I had to suck it up and hop on my erg even though rowing season is not even close to being over. I'll probably erg again tomorrow.

Good to see you again, Karyn ... and with directions to the Moon, yet!

I watched "Miracle at Oxford" while I rowed tonight ... stroked the last 20 minutes right with them, down the Thames ... I'm exhausted! Thanks to whoever recommended that movie, James, I think.
