What OTW Training have you done today

No, ergs don't yet float, but some of us do, and here's where you get to discuss that other form of rowing.

Its great to get in a single for the first time Greg. You'll be reluctant to do anything else in a while.

2x3500m R3:00

3500m 16:50.2 345 strokes r20.5 2:24.3 Max HR 152
Grounded oars on a shoal 50m from shore at 2700m. Almost a dead stop.

3500m 16:27.8 369 strokes r22.4 2:21.1 Max HR 158 then pushed last 300m which took it to 163.

3200m CD

I'll start to rate up soon I promise.

Yes, you have to know the ideal line and steer a bit. Also there are tactical moves during the race so you don't get forced into a non-ideal line. Big deal. Makes rowing interesting.

In your race do you all set off at intervals and if so how long?

Or is it somehow a mass start?

As you can see I know less than nothing, almost as little as TSO.

1k and 2k is usually "at once" = 6 lanes across from a dead-still start

Head races go of single file at 10-30 sec intervals.. & you get "up to speed" prior to the start line... (no false starts!)

There are odd races too.. Black Fly is a mass started head race...

So do they take an exact time you cross the line at the beginning and end to assertain your exact time and who has won?

Not exactly a good day for pairs and singles. I wonder if there were any in it. I usually figure at least 15 knot winds for white caps.

I thought (and wikipedia agrees) that the definition of Head race is time trials and separation between each competitor. The distance does not matter.
So the Black Fly is really just a mass start 5.8K race. Most open water races are mass start and they do not refer to them as head races. But the Black Fly is close to the best race anywhere--no matter what you call it.

In a single today with Paul in a launch. 5 miles on the Thames.

I took the boat out from it's rack in the boat house, no easy thing, especially with a trailer blocking the door Got a pair of oars, got myself launched and into the flow all on my own, Then proceeded to Putney pier and crossed the Thames to the Middlesex bank, the tide had just turned and was coming in now. Once I got going the confidence returned and I managed to get a few good ish stroke's together, at one stage I held a woman off for a while as she passed. Steering is still a work in progress, but I didn't hit anything or run aground, but I could stay closer to the bank. We went to Chiswick and turned, crossed back to Surrey and sculled back home.

It'll be good when I can go out on my own and spend a few hours working on stuff.

I seem to be increasing the opening of my arms at the catch slightly and it is a confidence thing I think. When I try to open fully the stroke goes tits up, when I shorten it a few inches it's ok.

The back muscle still not quite right but that was a good thing because it meant I took the catch quietly and didn't pull at all until the legs were finished. I ouldn't get the legs flat because of the middle of the boat, so I needed to raise the feet a few inches, which I didn't realize until later in the bar.

All in all a great outing!

Paul even spotted a huge log, which I then missed. He lasood it and towed it in. He has a wood burning stove.... So after I got back and lifted the boat out of the water, whilst see-saw-ing it about before I found the balance, then put it away with the help of a delightfully helpful cox named Vicky. I then helped get the log out.

Four races today. Is that allowed or is this thread only for trainings?

Slovacka regata in Breclav Czech Republic, with participants from Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary

Open double scull heat: 3rd place, not through to final
Masters single: 1st place, medal, won by five lengths
Open single heat (25 minutes after Masters single): 3rd place, not through to final
Masters eight: 2nd place in a very exciting race - board to board from start to finish, losing by 2m but frankly my tank was empty after 500m

Pretty happy, my main mission was to defend my Masters single title from a year ago. :D

Fantastic effort, well done B) Sounds like you had a very satisfying day.

I think we have to include race result's in this thread, after all that is why we are all sculling to race.

23K in a double with an expert sculler. The varsity coach and his wife, also an expert sculler, live up river and they invited our rowing club to go to their house for snacks this morning. It was not exactly training, more like good exercise. It was a beautiful morning and I always enjoy being in a double with an expert. I've made a date to do a 2x with a good friend tomorrow morning.

Hi Roy,
That's exactly what our coach said to do: gradually get the hands out more at the catch, but only as far as you are comfortable.

Sander, that is totally awesome!!!

Exciting stuff all around:
Sander ~ racing
Roy ~ 'logging' :P
Byron - cruising

Those races in the Czech Republic sound thrilling.

How many men did you beat to take the 1x title?
