Sure, but Roy rowed 6:34 at weight not so many years ago. From what I read he probably has a better base now than then.

No pressure. Roy's a player B)

I am no good at starts.

I've never practiced them.

I just need to practice them until I get the hang of how to get going.

But once I am going, sure, I can do 30 strokes, 1:50 @ 33 spm, no problem.

I'll try to get a screen shot as soon as possible.

I'll need some calm water to do it.

Waves are crashing in from the north off the big lake at the moment.

Hey.

It's the other 90 strokes in a 1K that are hard to come up with, no?

Not the first 30.

How's your fitness?

Can you still come up with the following 90?

If so, let's see a screen shot of it.

Hey, ranger--

Are you a WR record holder? No, didn't think so. Can you break 7:00? No, didn't think so.

Are you qualified to give advice? No, didn't think so

You're more than a little behind in the "posting of any evidence" dept.
I'd be happy to post anything you request once you complete your FM and the 1:50 250 meter piece OTW.

Indeed he is.

Most of the folks in indoor rowing are players.

But the more relevant question is:

Are they rowers?

Anyone can play at erging.

You just jump on the erg and bust a gut.

Any dummy can do that.

Posting evidence doesn't have anything to do with rowing, much less with improving your rowing.

My rowing OTW is now about 35% better than it was three years ago, 11 seconds per 500m at the same rate and level of effort.

Delighted with that.

I am also preparing to beat expectation by 10 seconds per 500m across a FM OTErg.

I am delighted with that, too.

Wish me luck!

Training is going _very_ well.

I am doing 25K a day and feel great.

No injuries. No sickness. No staleness. No soreness. No blisters. No chafing.

Now that my technique is worked out, both OTErg and OTW, I am also _much_ more relaxed.

Now, I am just rowing.

No need to think about it.

That is a _huge_ relief.

I have been thinking about it, thinking about it, thinking about it, for a decade now.

I am really ready to row--every morning.

Lovin' it.

High spirits.

Yea, OTErg, 13 SPI now comes along easy as can be.

Stroke feels great.

I get the whole vertical rise in the PM4 graph with the peak of my force curve--on every stroke.

135 kgF

This morning:

15K of "Steamrollering" OTErg, just before dawn.

The pools of sweat under my erg after I am done "Steamrollering" are getting _very_ large.

I need a big towel to mop them up.

Out OTW (if I can) after the sun comes up.

Pretty big wind out of the north at the moment, so it might not be possible.

Europe Lake is no good when the wind blows from the north (or south).

Kangaroo Lake also runs north to south.

But I'll see if I can find a wind-sheltered venue.

Rowley's Bay?

Waves are crashing in from the north off the big lake.

Heavy cloud cover.

The forecast is rain--until noon.

Rich:
I've a suggestion... a controlled experiment.

You give up OTW until November
I'll give up erging until November

In November we'll each do 2 x 5k
One on November 1, the next on November 3rd.

One will be OTW, the other will be OTErg.... both IND_V via the respective monitors...

This will test the efficacy of each type of training as each applies to being the better for both sports...

You love the erg.
I love the water....
What do you think?
3 Crash-B hammers
American 60's Lwt. 2k record (6:49) •• set WRs for 60' & FM •• ~ now surpassed
repeat combined Masters Lwt & Hwt 1x National Champion E & F class
62 yrs, 160 lbs, 6' ...

Speak for yourself.

I love both, equally.

And I now seem to be equally good at both.

That is a _huge_ asset.

You can't always row hard OTW.

In the winter, where I live, the water freezes.

Weather can also disrupt rowing OTW.

My ideal morning of rowing now would be 20K OTErg just before dawn, followed by 20K OTW, just after dawn.

I'll see if I can get to this over the next couple of weeks, before I leave Door County and go back to Ann Arbor.

My OTW and OTErg rowing are now perfectly aligned.

They differ by 15 seconds per 500m at the same rate.

I use the same technique for both.

I asked: "What do you think?"
...and you reply... off-topic.
You know what would happen, if we were both willing to engage in this... The same as what happened in 2010.

You wouldn't report anything at all.
I'd have another 20:0x 3 mile OTW and a sub 18:00 5k OTErg.

Please call me "ignorant", too ... it's the last resort of a provocative loser.... feeble insults by a guy with a hangover.

In 2010, I pulled 6:41 OTErg.

In 2002, I pulled 6:27.5
In 2003, I pulled 6:30
In 2004, I pulled 6:28
In 2006, I pulled 6:29.7, without even preparing for it.
In 2007, I pulled 6:42, without even preparing for it.
In 2009, I pulled 6:41, without even preparing for it.
In 2010, I pulled 6:41, without even preparing for it.

I haven't prepared to race since 2003.

But I am now.

I now row well (13 SPI) at low drag (120 df.).

Everyone gets about a dozen seconds over 2K from a couple of months of race preparation.

I am not sure what rowing well at low drag is worth, but I assume something comparable.

And that's always been quite a mystery.

He did it once, and never came close again.

Most of the time since, he hasn't come within 10 seconds of that.

Strange.

In competition, at public venues, I have puled 6:27.5, 6:28, 6:28.5, 6:29, 6:29.7, 6:30, 6:32, 6:32, 6:32, 6:32, 6:32, 6:33, etc.

That's a much more normal profile.

If Roy is capable of 6:34, then he should have rowed 6:34, over and over.

But in competition, at a public venue, he never came within four seconds of that.

And as a lightweight, he has only pulled sub-6:40 at a public venue once.

Strange.
