Day 80 of the 2012 Rowing Season....and we're having a tropical heat wave! Stay hydrated whenever and wherever you row!

The Bugs of Summmrrr

While there are MANY unsavory sorts of bugs of summmmmr, there are a few that bring some delight!

Image
Lightning bugs are some of my favorites....used to see them flitting over the cornfields in Virginia. They are tougher to find here in Colorado (but they're here!). So while you're out stargazing...be on the lookout for these bioluminescent winged beetles (aka fireflies).

Thank you!
I blame you for it :? - too many numbers makes my normal obsession with numbers even worse.
I have done far more meters than usual.
It took 78 days into the season, of which there were only 65 on which I was allowed to row. I rowed each of those days, except 1.
63 y / 70 kg / 172 cm / 5 kids / 17 grandkids :)

I'm with you. I'm a numbers guy and there are so many numbers to pay attention to with this rowing. I don't really need to have music or the TV on while rowing. Most of my time is spent calculating percentage of meters left or what I need to increase/decrease my pace to achieve a particular split at a given time. When I'm not rowing, I'm calculating how many meters more than my average I need to increase my meters/day to a certain level. Every day, I'm looking at my ranking on the honors board to see how many people I might be able to pass. I make no excuses for being obsessive about it, because the end result is I exercise a ton and am losing weight and getting healthy. I love following baseball stats in my spare time, but now I have my own sports stats to follow.

Congrats on the 1m. I plan to be there in no more than 13 more days.

Woot! Good catch, Rosi Image ! Melissa (aka MT) Image inputs some meters and RIGHT AWAY she's chosen as Concept2's member of the day (talk about incentive!) ! Definitely a lucky day ! We love having Luna-Tics in the rowing spotlight!

And, to make it an even more auspicious day....Tracy C signs on for the 2012 Rowing Season - welcome back, Tracy !

Image
While all this COOL stuff is happening, the heat wave continues through parts of the USA (whine)...in fact, I am absolutely certain that there is monsoonal weather parked directly above my house. The high humidity (Denver generally known for LOW humidity) is creating some poor performance for the evaporative cooler (there's a reason they also refer to these as swamp coolers). I was positive that there had to be a mechanical issue to explain why the temp inside the house was soaring into the 80s..until I looked at the charts...(hey, I just read Brett's numbers guy proclamation...and there are some number geek lurkers out there, too)..

Image
At 100 degree air temperatures, and what was then 40 percent humidity....swamp coolers just can't make it cooler....great time of year to row at the air conditioned gym!

Wowzer, I think that was a Bunny Trail episode!

Season meters as of 80/365 = 22,472,293 m

Total meters on the day = 220,979 m

Oars in space (participation) = 28 percent

MILESTONES...Bragging Rights...Celebrations:

1.25 MM Jay ..a cool one and a quarter million!
750 K AJ ... a cool three-quarter million
350 K Peter G
300 K Joe

Image ONE Million Meter Countdown :

Rosita with (35,045 m) to go!

Minnie with (57,324 m) to go!

Brett with (128,135 m) to go! I'd bet that it wasn't going to be much more than 10 more days ...

Bernie with (141,590 m) to go!

Thanks to all who rowed today!

Who else had never heard of an evaporative cooler?

From Wikipedia:

An evaporative cooler (also swamp cooler, desert cooler, and wet air cooler) is a device that cools air through the evaporation of water. Evaporative cooling differs from typical air conditioning systems which use vapor-compression or absorption refrigeration cycles. Evaporative cooling works by employing water's large enthalpy of vaporization. The temperature of dry air can be dropped significantly through the phase transition of liquid water to water vapor, which requires much less energy than refrigeration. In extremely dry climates, it also has the added benefit of conditioning the air with more moisture for the comfort of occupants. Unlike refrigeration, it requires a water source, and must continually consume water to operate.

Hi Luna-tics,
Zander has been in hospital the past 12 days and is there maybe another few days.
He picked up staph infection on one of his leg stumps at meet in Panama back in June but did nothing about till few weeks ago. He will be back rowing in a few weeks.
Good luck to my 2nd fav. team.

They seem to be somewhat uniquely an Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and California thing....although Australia has a bunch of them also (the one I have is made by an Aussie company).
