Happy 4th of July!!
Whether you're just getting started with rowing - or celebrating your mega-millions - we're glad you're rowing with us! Our journey back to Earth from the Moon will be a long one - and we know that it's made easier when rowing with our teammates. Thanks to each of you for what you bring with you on this journey!
Meanwhile, the holiday weekend here in the USA finds a good percentage of the team taking the opportunity to get some meters rowed! We've been mooned from coast to coast, and there are some historically significant meter numbers in Marty's 1776 m and Jay's 17,760 m. There are 300 more days to row in this 2012 rowing year - make 'em count for you!

Whooooosh !! Wowzer, mates - we're zipping right along - rowing in the fast track! Nothing like passing the 19 million meter mark ...of course, that's what Minnie said a few hundred thousand meters ago. Now she is definitely focused on the 20 million meter milestone and the fabulous Concept2 sports bag (loaded with goodies like new rowing shorts...) that awaits to celebrate this accomplishment. David A and Rosita have moved into the 800K realm ...and that means....ONE million meter watch will start very soon!
Meanwhile, a coyote was on the teebox of the first golf hole this morning. Brazen he was - just looking for field mice to bop on the head...or bunnies. Fortunately there were no Discovery Channel moments while I was there. Bottom line: thanks for your patience in waiting for the stats. There were captured at the usual early hour - just didn't have time to do justice to the posting.

Dog Days of Summer
With July being so "new", it's tough to think of things like the Fall Team Challenge....yet those calendar pages are on fast flip (and there's nothing like one of our young rowers posting a summer picture to show us how quick time is flying by - see Tris's new team photo!), and it will be here before you know it. For those new to rowing, or those of us busy with some alternative summer sports, Dog Days of Summer provides a great lead in towards the Fall Team Challenge. July is a great time to start building a bit of a distance base so that the 20,000 m starting point of week one of the Dog Days Challenge feels pretty good as a goal.
The Dog Days of Summer runs from August 1–28 and features a different total distance goal each week.
The Details
■Row or ski, indoors or outdoors, completing each of the following four distance goals during the timeframes indicated and log them in your online logbook:
■Week 1, Aug. 1–7: 20,000 meters
■Week 2, Aug. 8–14: 30,000 meters
■Week 3, Aug. 15–21: 40,000 meters
■Week 4, Aug. 22–28: 50,000 meters
The distance goals do not have to be done in one sitting, but must be done during the timeframe indicated. By the end of the challenge, you will have accumulated 140,000 meters.
With almost 40 percent of the team on the rowing machines yesterday, this team is already in the rowing groove! Milestones everywhere! Several half moon distances, a red giant (update of 50K +) and a supernova (update of 100K)in the skies above our rowing universe. Well done, Lunies!
Season meters as of 67/365 = 19,261,619 m
Total meters on the day = 432,143 m
Oars in space (participation) - 38 percent

Over in Oz, looks like The Landy and Baz are getting close to the sea. In a day or two, Baz will be able to look across the ocean in the general direction of Papua New Guinea - which is the site of his September Black Cat Track walk I think.

Buckle yer seatbelts, mates - it's a wild time of rowing! And to paraphrase some, those who say it can't be done, shouldn't get in the way of those who are getting it done!! Here's to a hooyah! moment in your day!!
Bet I wasn't the only one who learned a new word this week - "haboob", an Arabic word for giant sandstorm. Several of our teammates in the Phoenix, Arizona metro area were probably treated to a sight that must have looked like Armageddon with a wall of dust stretching 100 miles approaching....run, Toto, run! I know some lost power, etc. Whoa. Scary stuff. Similarly, we run into cosmic dust storms occasionally while rowing, and sometimes teammates are swept away for a time. We've activated the homing beacon, hoping they make it through the asteroid belt. Deja vu - we'll work our way back up to 19 MM meters! The good side of the cosmic storm is that teammates can be swept in - welcome back to Ben S!

Am I missing some thrilling advantage to changing teams every week ... like, do you get bonus frequent rower meters every time you re-enlist? I don't particularly care (but, I'm not the one keeping stats) ... just curious enough to speak!
