just curious about what our group shoots for in terms of time for a 5K row. As a 54 year old I have only broken the 20 minute barrier once in my rowing experience...my average times are around 22 minutes, sometimes I am 21:30 sometimes not...

Right now I'm shooting for a sub 21 minute time again but don't want to overdo it, just thought I'd get your thoughts.

Enjoy the 4th of July holiday weekend everyone :)

Dr Espo:
I share your tendency to row within a range of times- and between 21 and 22 minutes for 5K fits me a lot of the time- even though I can go faster.
I am turning 64 later this year- and it is really a stretch for me to push myself each and every workout.
But I have found that on those occasions when i want to push myself- and when I can push through the pain, I can go a really long time at about a 32 spm pace at a PB pace, for just about as long as I choose to stay in that zone- but it really hurts- and takes a lot of focus- so I try to avoid it.
Problems are that I still work, and I cant be too tired too often at work, and I also swim, and do other cardio work- it all takes energy- it also takes sufficient sleep and a good diet- and my job includes travel, so I miss a few rowing sessions just about every week.
I have always tried to use that metaphor about the wheel with even spokes rolling better that a wheel with uneven spokes- so I try to rationalize and keep my spokes- the exercises, the job, my family, my spiritual and intellectual pursuits, my interests in life, as even as I can.
But I really enjoy the rowing- it is my favorite exercise.
As the oracle says: It furthers one to have some place to go.
Gary

Thanks a lot for your input Gary...I must say you are extremely active, good for you! I think I'll shoot for an average of 21.5 minutes and go from there. I find i have to row at least 4 times a week or I get lax, so 4 times a week it is!

Best regards,
