Ranger's training thread
Re: Ranger's training thread
Only a few days left till the month of May. Tell us o wise one, of all the WR you are going to break this week what are you going to start with today? I am beyond excitement. I have even got the afternoon off so i can watch you punch in the details from your PM. Will you be doing your FM today or will it just be a leisurely 10k? The suspense is killing me.

As I have mentioned, I will probably try the distance two or three times, starting with 1:52 and working through 1:50 pace to 1:48 pace.
All three would be 60s hwt FM WRs--and pbs.
The 60s lwt FM WR is 2:00 pace.
I am on no particular schedule, but sure, I hope it will be soon.
Training is coming along great.

Re: Ranger's training thread
That's a brilliant strategy. I think I'll borrow that idea when I do my first mile race. I will do the mile run two or three times, starting with a 4:02 and working though a 4 minute mile to a 3:58 mile. I am delighted with my training and will do that as soon as I am fully trained and sharpened. I just learned a new stride so I need to get fully habituated to it. The sub-four minute mile is coming soon. I suspect I will do it the same day you do your FM@1:48. Wish me luck.Ranger wrote: My first race will be a FM. Re: Ranger's training thread
Come on, Byron, stick to your plan! Weren't you going to set new WR's at all distances from FM down to 40 yard dash with the new stride? Don't just do the mile, your goals are much better than that now!Byron Drachman wrote:That's a brilliant strategy. I think I'll borrow that idea when I do my first mile race. Re: Ranger's training thread
Like the first swallow of summer here we have it as predicted. "I will PROBABLY" and "all three WOULD be" WR's and PB's. Thats if you ever get to do them. Im on no particular schedule but hope it happens soon!! Priceless! Did you know im on a similar schedule with regards to being nuts deep in Salma Hayak? Shall we put some money on me fullfilling my quest before you do? I dunno? Say $1000? Sounds like a nice sum. It will be easy to pay for a man of your financial acumen when you fail.ranger wrote:My first race will be a FM.bellboy wrote:Only a few days left till the month of May. Re: Ranger's training thread
Silly me. What a rookie mistake! I forgot that I need to do these things top down. So I will do three marathons to start. I will do the first one at a WR pace and then do each of the following ones faster than the last. They will become easier as I become more habituated to my new stride. Then I will move to the shorter distances. Like Ranger, I will skip the ultra-long distances.whp4 wrote:Come on, Byron, stick to your plan! How about that 20 pullup video? I am a naysayer and don't believe you can do them until you post a video. And when you do, be sure to make them dead-hang pullups, no sissy varieties allowed.

Re: Ranger's training thread
We'll need your GPS logs so we can be sure you're not striding with breaks. It'll be no good just giving us an avg metres/stride number. Best of luck with your quest. Seven marathons in seven days is the current WR. But you'll be doing eight in seven days, of course.Byron Drachman wrote: Silly me. What a rookie mistake! That would be 30 pullups, not 20. Here is one of the earlier postings by our hero:aharmer wrote:How about that 20 pullup video? I am a naysayer and don't believe you can do them until you post a video. And when you do, be sure to make them dead-hang pullups, no sissy varieties allowed.
Ranger wrote:March 19, 2011: Mike-- I can't imagine something that is much more skeletal-muscular in focus than rowing. How is your skeletal-muscular fitness, your full-body power relative to your weight? Can you do 50 jackknives? 25 extension press ups? 30 pull ups? Etc. If not, that might be your problem. You have the skeletal-muscular capacities of a sedentary old man. You have lost your youthful full-body power. I am going to give my old Peinert26 to my second son, Colin, who is 25 years old now. He can do these skeletal-muscular things (30 pull ups, 50 jackknives, etc.) easily--as I can, too.
Re: Ranger's training thread
Very interesting ranger. Your distance sessions are 1:47/r24 for 10k, yet they take you 40 minutes. A normal person would call that a distance session of 2:00/r24. 8.44 SPI.ranger wrote:I am now getting a _very_ respectable 11.7 SPI at 95 df. in my distance rowing.
1:47 @ 24 spm
Four 10K sessions a day would be ideal, I think, one every few hours, the first in the early morning hours (4 a.m.) and the fourth in the late afternoon (4 p.m.), with one later in the morning (8 a.m.) and one at noon (12 p.m.).
10K is a nice tidy bout of rowing, only 40 minutes, but time enough to get some good work done.
ranger
During these sessions let's say your rest breaks consist of very easy paddles. This means about 2:13 pace for a 6:40 erger like you and I. That would mean you actually do 1:47 pace for about 5k during these 40 minute sessions. So basically a 10x500 at 1:47, 2' rest.
This, coincidentally, is almost the exact L1 workout a 7:05 2k erger would do. Hmmm.
Let's take it a step further and discuss the subject of you showing workout results. You said yourself that 10k was a nice number because you can easily set the monitor to 10k and count down. This is frightening to me that somebody chooses workouts because the 10 second process of setting the monitor is too difficult, but I digress. And for somebody that doesn't care about tracking the numbers during training I don't understand why you even set the monitor to 10k, but I digress again.
Seeing that this is a workout you are already doing several times a day, it clearly is not something you would consider "racing your training". This session is not going to cause you to go crazy and race every day...correct? So it seems to fit all the parameters of something you would deem acceptable to posting a screenshot of. I'd really like to see this session as a screenshot with your average HR. There appears to be no reason not to show it other unless you're not doing it...or it would show a HR you're not proud of showing.

Re: Ranger's training thread
The crux of ranger's greatest fraud. He rows everything as Just Row. If you take a break and resume before the PM times out the elapsed time appears to be continuous.aharmer wrote:You said yourself that 10k was a nice number because you can easily set the monitor to 10k and count down.
This is why he is unable to post IND_V results. Outside of 2K comps his ranked early rows were in fact Just Rows, i.e., with breaks
Re: Ranger's training thread
Sure.aharmer wrote:So it seems to fit all the parameters of something you would deem acceptable to posting a screenshot of.
But I am not a 6:40 erger.
Over the last couple of years, I have been doing 6:41, right around WR pace, rowing poorly, unprepared, at max drag (200+ df).
I am now preparing to race--rowing well at normal drag (140 df.).
Everyone gets about a dozen seconds over 2K from race preparation (anaerobic intervals, etc.).
Compared to rowing poorly at high drag, rowing well at a normal drag is worth about the same.

Training isn't a race.
It is an opportunity to work on your weaknesses.
You only get better by overcoming your weaknesses.
In races, I have been pulling right around WR pace, without even preparing for it.
For the last two years, I have had the best 2K time in my age and weight division, even though I was in the last two years in the division.
Last year, no one my age and weight came within 20 seconds of my 2K.

20 pull ups is a cinch, no matter what.
But I have to be at weight to do 30.
