I suspect that, in his prime, when Eskild E.'s favorite session was 18K for 60min, he rated 30 spm and pulled 10 MPS at 11.7 SPI.

How do you invent this crap? Do you have a random sentence generator pre-primed with a stock of "Ranger Bullshit Bingo" phrases?

There's no way you'd know anything about Eskild's training, everything you've written is a figment of your warped desires for him. You don't row like Eskild, you row like shit, just as you have for many years. If fact it's not rowing, it's good old fashioned anchor hauling (as you've always done). Best of luck with your swimming lessons when you take the boat out again.

It looks as though I am much more willing to go the full 2.5 hours on the Kurt Kinetic after erging if I (1) back off my HR just a bit to 140 bpm and (2) take a bit of a break after 75min (to towel off, drink a cup of coffee (ah, drugs!), and tank back up on water.

I'll be delighted if the solution to getting comfortably to 2.5 hours a day on my bike is as easy as this.

Yea.

Just experimenting back then.

Lots of things that I needed to take full advantage of the low drag were still missing--full slide, proper footwork (toe, heel, toe), relaxed shoulders and abs at the catch, relaxed shoulders when I engage my back, more upright posture, rhythmic integration of the stroke cycle (on a 12/8 meter), quicker hands and back on the recovery, etc.

So, I went back to rowing at max drag.

Since then, I have figured these other things out, too, though. So, now I can take full advantage of the low drag with no awkwardness or loss in stroking power, and with many gains--high rate, high ratio, light chain, big legs, better timing and sequencing, quicker handle into the finish, etc.

Hard to know where this comes from.

I have the best 2K in my age and weight category the last two years.

Last year, no one my age and weight (or older) came within 20 seconds of my 2K.

Uprepared!

Just on the basis of foundational, low rate training, concentrating on technique.

No distance rowing, no distance trials, no sharpening.

I'm going to get "Last year" added to my RANGR bingo card. I'll also get "20 seconds" added.

How many races have you completed this year? ONE in 7:02 with lots of pauses and loads of anchor hauling!
How many WRs have you got in the 60-69 HWT, 60-69 LWT, 60-64 HWT or 60-64LWT categories? NONE, zip, nada, Sweet FA, diddly squat!

Why do you have to race every year?

Erging is all about training.

Racing is redundant, irrelevant, damaging, etc.

If you are fully prepared to race, your 2K score is predictable.

If you aren't prepared to race, a good 2K score is impossible.

If you just prepare to race, you get worse and worse.

Etc.

In general, you are as good as your best races--until you figure out how to get better.

After you race well, the important thing is what you are doing with your training to get better, not how many times you race to demonstrate how good you are.
