Ranger's training thread
Re: Ranger's training thread
The IP plan likes to say that UT2 rate is 22 spm.
But I think that's just a norm.
Elite young lightweight rowers, I think, can rate up to 28 spm at UT2.
Rowers who have less skill, experience, talent, fitness, etc., have to lower the rate to 16 spm to stay at UT2.
That's quite a swing in rate!
12 spm
At something like 11 SPI, that's 132 watts or as much as 20 seconds per 500m.
Elite young lightweight pull 1:45 at UT2.
Those who have less skill, experience, talent, fitness, etc., pull 2:05.

This attitude always intrigues me. So you have to be a WR holder (or ex WR holder in your case) to offer advice or opinion?ranger wrote:Given that I have three WR rows but you haven't rowed within 20 seconds of a 2K WR, I would say that there is evidence that I know what I am talking about, because I have done it, and you don't know your ass from your elbow, because you can't row worth shit.
It also interesting to see you a little irritable whenever someone points out the truth to you. It's very unlikely I'll ever be a WR holder on the erg although I'll see how I'm doing when I'm in the sparsely populated age groups like you. Having said that, my training is right on track for a lwt 6:00 2k. That's right on track in the same sense that you're right on track for a 6:16 2k....

To someone who has three WR rows and is on track in their training to pull 26 seconds under the WR for their age and weight?lancs wrote:This attitude always intrigues me. So you have to be a WR holder (or ex WR holder in your case) to offer advice or opinion?
I don't know.
What do you think?
You haven't come anywhere near a WR.
You've missed it by five seconds per 500m.
That's a lot.
Why not attend to your own business first?
Get some experience training yourself to pull something like WR pace.
Then, sure, you'd understand the issues involved a little better.
Don't you think?

You have every reason to be bewildered. Mike's measured UT2 pace is much worse than the pace you've decided is your UT2 pace. And yet year after year he turns in faster times than you in the longer events that are weighted towards high UT2 ability. It really is quite bewildering.ranger wrote:I continue to be bewildered by Mike VB's UT2 pace.

Who?
Beginner rowers with "less fitness" and talent, not one, row at 16 spm. Go to any gym and see.

My 100K pb is 6:47.
My FM pb is 2:40.
60min is 16.7K.
5K is 17:10.
30min is 8480m.
Etc.
I am _much_ better than these pbs now, though, as I will soon demonstrate.
I have spent the last few years training, getting better, not racing, racing, racing, repeatedly demonstrating how I am becoming worse and worse, because I don't know how to train.

That, too, if they pull 6 SPI and don't row at UT2.
But they don't pull 28 spm @ 11 SPI at UT2, either.

Re: Ranger's training thread
Let's get one thing straight here because we can base it on actual fact.
Mike's rowing ability is simply outstanding and thats before you even factor in his age and weight, at which point it becomes simply awesome.
He is also straight up with ranked IND_V pieces at the drop of a hat while Ranger continues to just pull numbers out of a hat.......for seven years straight.

Re: Ranger's training thread
That's not what I asked though is it? So why did you decide to invent a question to answer, rather than addressing the issue I raised? Could it be because my point was valid and you have no response?ranger wrote:What times have I turned in for the longer events?PaulH wrote:You have every reason to be bewildered. Rich:
I am so very touched that you devote so many lines to the meager & decrepit condition of my training, instead of illustrating your perfection.

Is this because you aren't doing much training anymore?
As for my training, there’s
no mystery to the benefits of erging at low rates (18-20 spm)... and slow paces:
It gives me a chance to get form and smooth pressure down so that I can move a 1x more effectively. The result being: The ability to get evenly executed pressure on at higher rates
Example:
Did you see the smoother 500m I posted two days ago? (see my blog)
500m - 1:35.6 - 35
100m in 18.9 - 1:34.5 - 41
200m in 19.1 - 1:35.5 - 34
300m in 19.3 - 1:36.5 - 31
400m in 19.1 - 1:35.5 - 35
500m in 19.2 - 1:36.0 - 34
I did this after two crummy 400's ~ they stank.
None the less: 1:35.6 @ 35 is rowing well when you weigh 162 lbs as I do... Consider the watts per kilo factor...and that I am not a spring chicken... as you still are
Why not give 500m a whirl @ 35 spm for us to see?
In your lusty, E.E. adulating, fat-boy condition, it should be a piece of cake for you, spi princess that you are…
I know your answer already: You think I'm "racing my training"... "showboating"..
Rich: Let me let you in on a non-secret: I do most of my erging slower than 2:00 pace..... (remember? that was your original point)
While you claim to be at 12-13 spi all the time :
Yet: I can erg under 18:00 for 5k at will... while you have to sharpen for it.

That has to be the knockout blow!
Even you have to agree that's it, it's all over - game, set & match?
Mike is much better than you.
End of story.

Sure, but my goal during sharpening is to do a 17:00 5K at the beginning of each session.mikvan52 wrote: I can erg under 18:00 for 5k at will
In the fall of 2003, I did 17:30 for 5K at the beginning of each of my sharpening sessions.
I did 4Ks @ 1:42 and 8Ks @ 1:45.
I now need to lower those 4Ks to 1:39 and those 8Ks to 1:43.
