Ranger's training thread
Re: Ranger's training thread
For once I have to say that MvB has shown clear evidence of rangers demise. ranger has YET to SHOW any clear evidence other than a 7+ 2k time at BIRC and anything remotely contemporary to support his 'ifs' & 'buts' of recent times.
Of course, 'if's' & 'BUT'S' have no clear margins other than than those of the poster, ie ranger and his hypothesis. So Mike vB has shown with recent evidence of a better decline within the parameters of age than ranger.
So, basically, Mike can evidence his progress, regardless of age than the liar Richard Cureton.
Good work MIke. Poor show rich ( as usual, ...........)

Re: Ranger's training thread
Wake up, Mike.
I have already done a sub-6:30 2K @ 12 SPI, without even preparing for it, still struggling with technique.
It ain't a pipedream, because it is a fait accompli.
You have never done anything of the sort.
Even three years ago, when you were 55, you missed it by four seconds per 500m.
You now miss it now by seven seconds per 500m.
Why?
Clearly, my technical problems are now resolved.
I now have a stroke to use.
13 SPI, 120 df.
And I am now preparing to race.
How about you?
What's the future, Mike?
7:00 for 2K?
Not that?

2K is not the issue.
But 10K might make my point.
I'll try that tomorrow.

A 10k w/suunto hr monitoring? IND_V
2k spilts (standard C2 ones)?
If you average 281 watts for this 10k and hold 12 spi you'll need a stroke rate of 23.4 spm...
And (big bonus) you will break the 60-69 lwt WR of 35:34.7 set by Brian Bailey..
Reality check... at 23 spm... a WR... at 23 spm.... oops!
Be still my heart.
Tell us what stroke rate you'll choose.
Remind us what your "point" is?
A steady UT workout?
AT?
and your goal is?
Let me guess: 26 spm
watts/stroke ratio ratio = 12.0
Wouldn't that mean 1:44 avg. pace for 10k...?
Nope... not part of the ranger repertoire
(thinking) try again:
22 spm
A 12 would be just a tad faster than 1:50 pace...
"Nope" again! ...not at UT, not at middling AT either...
I think you might want to revise your claims. Call in Elvis to help

Re: Ranger's training thread
Wouldn't the ranger have to be a lwt to claim a lwt record?mikvan52 wrote:If you average 281 watts for this 10k and hold 12 spi you'll need a stroke rate of 23.4 spm...

No you won't. I bet you won't row a consecutive 2k tomorrow, much less 10k.ranger wrote:Naw.mikvan52 wrote:Perch the camera behind your erg and show the curve as you do a UT 2k .

And to suggest you'll ever post any evidence of it? Whatever. You're a frickin loser.

Re: Ranger's training thread
Played around with some sprints today.
It will be a hell of a slog (an ish-load of strokes), but I think I can rate 50 spm for 500m, right at 12 SPI, max drag.
If I can, I'll pull 1:23.5, 600 watts.
That would be right on my target of 1:24.
500m is done at 2K - 10.
70 strokes?
I don't think I want to rate over 50 spm.
I get diminishing returns when the rate gets above that.

Re: Ranger's training thread
I loosened up the rate and stroking power today and was delighted to find how much I had improved, vis-a-vis last year.
PaulS is right that 10 MPS feels silky smooth, if you just relax into it.
Effortless.
1:43 @ 29 spm (11 SPI) felt _great_.
It seemed to me today that I might be able to do it for an hour.
If so, that would also be right on my target.
As I was discovering last year, although with quite a bit more struggling with technique, in the end, 10MPS might be my preferred way of racing, at all distances.
I don't think that it is the best way to train, but it might indeed be the best way to race.
I continue to be amazed by the effect of high ratios on the perception of rate.
Given my short little legs, at low drag (119 df.) and 12 SPI, even at 30 spm, I am in a 3-to-1 ratio, .5 seconds for the drive, 1.5 seconds for the recovery, so the substantial rate doesn't feel frenetic at all.
I get to rest 1.5 seconds between drives, and the drives themselves become _very_ brief.

So(!)
Yesterday evening's "I think I'll do 10k" morphed into
Cutting to the chase:
How many uninterrupted meters is it that you can go at 12.0 spi average at above a 23?
{edit}
oops! I just noticed::::>>>> ranger spi has been lowered again! another full point: from 12 to 11...I yearn for the fall when we could hear the words "I do all my rowing at 13 spi" ringing from the great north woods.
ranger's spi contention list
January= 13
February= 12.5
late February = 12.0
March= 11.0
Careful, cureton: You'e beginning to appear human

Re: Ranger's training thread
At max drag, I suspect that 50 spm is a 1-to-1 ratio for me.
.6 seconds for the drive; .6 seconds for the recovery.

The first 40 strokes of a 500m @ 50 spm are a cinch.mikvan52 wrote:How many uninterrupted meters is it that you can go at 12.0 spi average at above a 23?
It's the last 30 strokes that kill you.
To train for a 500m, I'll need to do a bunch of 300s, grooving into 1:23 @ 50 spm, until it is _very_ smooth.
Then I can add the rag-bag 30 strokes needed to get to the end.

Oh, sorry.mikvan52 wrote:Somehow I fail to see how your answer has anything to do with the question.
I thought I was being clear.
Sure, the first 40 strokes, 1:23 @ 50 spm (12 SPI), are easy.
It's the last 30 strokes that are hard.
Is that clear?

There seems to be a dense fog over that little shack by the Huron:
How many uninterrupted meters is it that you can go at 12.0 spi average above 23 SPM?

Re: Ranger's training thread
Hey, Mike.
Try this one.

That's 16 SPI, not 12 SPI.
1:43 is as fast as you can row for 2K.
