Here's my experience with rowing... I got the erg when my first choice of exercise, stress-reduction, and cardio -- running -- started having a negative effect on my knees. I did some investigation, and the erg seemed like a great solution for some cross-training -- full-body exercise, low-impact, indoors for inclement weather, etc. It has been a great go-to exercise when I can't get outside, or only have 20 or 30 minutes and don't have the time to drive to a trail head or a favorite running route. It's not and won't ever be my primary form of workout, but I think it will always be part of my fitness lineup.

Ironicly, now that I've left behind most road running for the trails, my knees are great, but now it's my feet that are giving me trouble -- metatarsalgia. Always something, I guess.

Rowing has definitely affected my health, although I can't say I've lost a lot of weight because of it. I've definitely shifted to being stronger in the year's worth of rowing I've done though. What's amazing to me is that after a year of rowing, I'm looking forward to rowing for the rest of my life and am still motivated to set higher goals. That's unheard of for me with "exercise" and I've burned through aerobics DVDs, running, ellipticals, etc. I admit I find it hard to balance my job with fitting rowing in... usually it's a 5-5:30am thing on weekdays, and sometimes the bed is just so warm.

Anyway, I got the erg a year ago December, and it took me 14 months to hit a million meters. I am unlikely to hit a million meter season this round, but that will be my goal next round. Just will take a tiny bit more effort on consistency.

Back after traveling some. Boy 2 weeks off really hurts. Building back up. I know the March challenge is individual but do you still have to sign up? I can't find a place to sign up. I'm trying to keep some time and motivation to stay fit as I have 6 really hectic and scary months in front of me. We are moving to another State in July, and I have lots of work related items and credentialing issues I need to overcome.

Rowing was a sport I always wanted to participate in, but because of my work schedule I was never able to. I hated seeing the sign up sheets for the West Side Rowing Club of Buffalo, knowing I would never be able to row with them. It's a long story; I moved south in 1998 and retired from GM in the fall of 2005. In 2008 a masters rowing club, the Black Warrior Rowing Club ( http://www.blackwarriorrowingclub.com/) started up in Tuscaloosa. I can honestly say getting involved in the club has changed my life for the better. Our first coach was real aggressive. For our first race, we competed in the Dogwood Regatta in the spring of 2009 taking 2nd place for our class! That race got me to seriously training on the Concept 2's at the "Y". Our first head race in Huntsville the fall of 2009, we took a 1st place! This meant so much to me... I was skinny nonathletic kid in gym class who was always the last one picked when choosing teams. My 40th high school reunion was last fall.. I know I had a bunch of those old jocks annoyed in that at 150 pounds I was only 15 pounds heavier than I was 40 years previous and I could pull off wearing my Utilikilt! The friends I have made through the rowing club and the /timbukTOO'S here: sharing my life with you all has made such such a positive difference. Many times the main reason I drag my butt to the "Y" to work out is so I can have meters for our team here! I always feel better after working out realizing the good it is doing for my body both physically and mentally. I did not mean to ramble on so... it comes from my journalling. (I share some entries through the Black Warrior Rowing Club site. Members pages/Jamie)

That is a great piece to go ape over, if you can muddle through it.
Just make sure you leave out that "s" at the beginning of the URL:

I can relate to that... As someone who grew up loving sports, yet on a good day playing Right Field, and on a bad day Left Out, I moved to sports that were individual efforts, and in which I could compete against myself & my last time out.
I'm still not ready for the Utilikilt, though...
