High Schooler's First 2k

Post by Lorax » February 22nd, 2011, 12:49 am

Hello I am a 5'7 female weighing in around 133lbs and I just completed my first 2k. My time was 9min and my av. split was 2:15. Not good I know but quite frankly I'm just happy I completed it! I have to do another in a few weeks so I'm wondering what you guys would recommend in order to improve my time. Thanks!

2 suggestions to start.

1. Take no notice of anything you read about the training of, or hear from, our resident troll and certifiable lunatic, RANGER.

2. Have a look at the c2 UK website. They offer an interactive training program for 2k improvement. You have done your initial 2k trial, so all u need now is some basic heart rate measures and the site will devise a suitable training program for you. There are many such programs, but as a beginner, this is as good as anything.

Depending on how old you are there is probably enormous scope for you to be making strength gains in a gym using very basic "heavy" movements. You should talk to your coach about what might be suitable for you. Plenty of suggestions in the forum here though if you have a good look around.

If you have any questions about your technique, post a video of 20 or 30 strokes up here and youll get some critique for crtain from people of far greater experience and expertise than me. At this point its very important you remember suggestion number one as above.

for the record, 9 min 2k for a female in high school in her first attrempt is very encouraging. well done.

Start a log on the Concept2 web site and keep track of all your training runs.
See how you rank using this tool http://www.concept2.com/sranking03/rankings.asp and try to "take out" the next person who's faster than you. I find this a great motivator.
