Are your parents alive?
Do you have siblings?
Do you have an extended family--cousins, nephews, aunts, uncles, grandparents?
BTW, family are always supportive, but even so, it isn't hard to support my erging, for anyone (friends, acquaintances, strangers like you, etc.).

BTW, my brother's son, who has been doing a Ph.D. and post-doc in microbiology at Harvard, has come out twice to see me row at WIRC, the second time with his new wife. Once, I broke the WR; once, I bombed. He was equally supportive in both cases, as family always is.
He is a soccer-player--in his early 30s now. He runs five miles a day, bikes a lot, and even ergs, occasionally.
