Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Instead of making cheese dip & calling the bookie, many TimbukTOOians took the opportunity yesterday to increase their fitness! Nine used their ergs, and one used his Model E Rowing Machine!
10 of our 55 outstanding members (18%?!) logged 100,014 meters Saturday, which caused macho men to hand the remote controls to their wives! (18%? Don't make me come over there, or it won't be pretty...)
Milestones achieved: Joel W hit 550K, while Tom W hit 400K!
Land ho!: Bryan 10K from 1.9MM, Raymond quite near 800K (-8,906m), Casey approaching 700K (-16,872m), Paul E near 450K (-7,392) Mark now in sight of 300K (-17,792m), while Brenda sneaks up on 150K (-11,876m)!
Posted Meters:
Tom W – 19,086 Hot stuff!
Matthew R – 14,206 Solid hour!
Fred B – 11,326 E as in excellent!
Gary G – 10,550 Sorry, vacation's over!
Joseph W – 10,000 The Life & Legend of Wyatt's Erg...
Mark S – 9,977 Nice...
Chris H – 8,000 Glad you're setting Pbs!
Joel W – 6,729 That's 7 days in a row!
Brenda H – 5,140 Gave Dennis a break, did ya?
Daiva S – 5,000 Keeping her fitness gains going!
I just wanted to categorically deny any claims of subliminal manipulations to get people to row.
Really, you can watch the supeR bOWl if you wish,
Or cheeR nOW for your favorite team,
Without me bROWbeating you or getting EXERCISEd in any way!

More powerful than you realize... I stretched my Personal Best for a one-hour row from 16,009 to 16,393, moving from 17th to 9th best in my age group! (The other 1,222 was a 5-minute warm-up.)damselfly wrote:Yisroel H - 17,615 Another powerful row from our Cap'n!

While sometimes the tiredness will depress heart rate, it's much more likely that it wouldn't go up because you're much more fit, and your heart can pump sufficient blood and oxygen at fewer beats per minute.garygOP wrote:I could not get my pulse up above 122 on the ARC, which is unusual, and in the last 5 minutes on the erg, all I could get up to was about 132.
Apparently, the shoveling took a lot out of me.

Can't beat that grasping for air rush... An incline didn't help, adjusting the damper helped a lot

Did you just do a 10K or 2 5Ks? Did you do it as a PB attempt?

This was two 5Ks, one in the morning and one in the evening. Unfortunately yesterday warming up for 500 meter PB ski has resulted in injury to groin/upper thigh Forced to rest today.

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
A Message To Our Team
First, my condolences to all those being introduced to Izzy-isms for the first time - hope it’s not on a full stomach!
Secondly, I must admit – by way of introduction – that I love Paradox. As I always told my students, “I love Paradox, but hate Contradiction!” So here’s the paradox: I have two important messages:
1) You can do more than you think you can!
2) You can’t do as much as you think you can!
Your body is wondrously made. It is extremely adaptable, self-cleansing and self-repairing. Your brain makes about one trillion micro-decisions a day, but is still available for your conscious thought & decisions. Your heart will beat about 3 billion times during your lifetime without wearing out. Unlike your car, you have 3 different “engines” - for sudden movements, for strenuous activity, and for steady activity. You can burn almost anything in your body for fuel, etc.
As you push your body to be able to row for extended periods, your body makes your heart beat more efficiently, adds new veins and capillaries, increases mitochondria and glycogen in the muscles, strengthens connective tissue like tendons and cartilage, flushes out damaged tissue & cells, etc. Most people, even if they work out moderately hard, will never exceed 70% of their physical capabilities. So, go for it – your body can handle it!
Which brings me to my second point: You can’t do as much as you think you can. It takes about 5 years to produce an endurance athlete, about 4 for a strength athlete. It takes your body about 24 hours to repair heart muscle after exercise, about 48 hours for full repair of non-injured muscles, and 48-72 hours for repair of joints and connective tissue. If you don’t consume sufficient amounts of nutrition, your body may not have the capacity to fully repair itself, let alone improve. If you don’t rest sufficiently, the fatigue outpaces the growth.
So, you can’t just say, “I will train like the pros, and become a pro!” Professionals have miles more capillaries, more heart, lung, and regenerative capacity, and sturdier connective tissue, joints and bones.
Bottom Line: The VTC was great. You abused yourselves a little, overdid it somewhat, and your body could handle it – but you were sore. Now, you took off a little time, your body had a chance to solidify its gains, for the growth to outpace the fatigue.
Athletes call this “periodization” – they may build up over 13-16 weeks (strength athletes usually 6-8 weeks), hit some PBs (Personal Bests), then take a few light weeks – even losing a little bit of fitness – before beginning the next season and build-up.
You didn’t do 13 weeks - you did 5, so you didn’t need a month off - you needed a week. That rest was very important. But so is getting back on the erg now, and starting the process of building up again, slowly. You worked hard for those gains – please solidify them, and add to them. For your health, for your energy levels, for your longevity, and for clarity of mind…
Let’s please use the 2011 Valentine’s Challenge (Feb. 9 – 14) to jump-start our next build-up!
