Wowzer....looks a bit closer, doesn't it?!
The number in the team meters that we're still looking for to give us the official distance is 95,238,108 m
Total distance to our "official" 384,000,000 m = 1,935,832 m
Given that we are currently in the 300-350K a day mode (although moon excitement may rev us up!), I still think we will meet the official in six days or on February 10th.
Celebrating Life
We celebrate many things here as team members; most of those things are all about the numbers of meters we row. What we're really celebrating is how we go about getting those meters - sometimes with enthusiasm, sometimes by slogging through it all, sometimes with delight that we conquered another milestone. It's not too much of a stretch to suggest that how we go about our virtual rowing life is a reflection of how we go about our real world lives.
Our teammate Ray did not survive his accident. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family in this loss. Ray only posted a couple of items - one prior to going on his training, and one cheering us on while he was in training. In both of those postings, he said that the training would be helpful in his work although he would miss his wife and new baby very much during the two weeks he would be away. We knew Ray only as a devoted dad and husband - and the kind of teammate who put his all into a challenge.
Even though I am sure that we all try to share some of the Luna-Tics rowing lore with our families and friends, I'd bet that most cannot truly appreciate the level of friendship and support that this virtual team provides. Ray was one of the good guys that we hoped to see for many seasons.
When accidents happen and take away friends and family, it's hard to see the "why" in the grand scheme of things. It is difficult to accept that someone has just winked out of existence. We have lost a valued teammate, and will remember his passion for life and family. And we celebrate the kind of life he lived.

I am so sorry. I just do not know what to say.
Jan, is there anything you think that we can do for Ray’s family? Anything that they need?

God bless Ray's wife , son, and family. I am so sorry for the loss of such a nice family man.

Sometimes it is so difficult to understand the meaning of it all, and it is so hard to fathom the loss of Ray. Our thoughts are with his family right now.

Today is Moon Day.
We've completed the 384,000,000 m required to get here from our various "theres!" We've commenced our orbital row of 11,526,910 m, and will land on the moon at the end of the victory orbit. So, while we won't officially land on the moon today, raise your glass to cheer for the team and all the Luna-Tics who have ever been a member of this team, for completing a significant portion of an adventure we began in 2003. Mind you, we expect to zip along quite handily now that we have the hang of interstellar travel !

Real and virtual memories
I am deeply saddened by Ray's tragic death and his grieving family.
Today our team has entered its virtual orbit of the Moon.
Today many of us learned of the death of a real bright and shining teammate, Ray Wilson.
I think it a fitting tribute that in years to come
we'll recall this day of our virtual team accomplishment
and we'll think of the very real Ray.

That is a great idea, AJ.
And thanks, K2, for posting the hard news about Ray. You could not have said it better.
To Ray's family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Ray made a great impression in a very short time here on the team as to the kind of man he was - enthusiastic, dedicated, giving and so much in love with his family. My prayers are with you.

Rest in peace Ray.

Rest in peace Darryl.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your wife.
Both of you helped a lot the team to get to the moon and you are in our hearts!
Sadly,
Andrea and Sorin
P.S. I left for a business trip to India just after I managed to finish rowing for the VTC and just got back and was stunned to read about Darryl's passing three month ago and now Ray's.
Even if we cannot visit the forum as much as we would like, and did not meet anybody in person, we feel very close through the encouragement, stories, achievements and kind thoughts.
If there is anything we can do to help Ray's young family, please let us know!
Re: Call to action
Distressing news of your accident, Ray. Please be assured of my prayers and support.Kona2 wrote:
We've shown that collectively we can make a lot of good things happen, row a lotta meters, and watch out for each other in virtual team kinds of ways. Our teammate Ray was injured seriously in a training accident yesterday - and he is going to need all our positive thoughts to help him. No details known at this time, just a request from his family to pray for him and for them.

Tunnel in space
We hit a time-space tunnel (a wormhole!)this afternoon - and lost a couple of teammates in the process. As always, we wish them well wherever they row. We emerged from the tunnel about 600K short of the moon, and we're still on course to reach it...and the subsequent orbit.
