Thanks for the cool tub, AJ. I love the pink and the sticks and emblem. Now after reading all the posts since my last log on, and hearing the cheers and encouragement I think I'll go get back on the rower, and do just a few more meters for the day.

A.J., Thank you for the ocean rowing boat. I feel like Roz Savage with a tan. We use kayaks up here and Pa has been many times ocean kayaking, but I feel much safer in my ocean rowing boat. I have had fun and I show my students the graphics.DUCKMARX wrote:BAZzy wrote: . . . what a great effort on the challenge, an oar-some performance by the team, and some solid individual numbers have been cranked out.
Picking up on what BAZ is saying, . . .
Here are examples of one day 'oar-some', 80K+ performances:
Jay, 92,040 meters on January 14th
Chip, 89,824 meters on January 21st
Ray, 88,111 meters on January 14th
Cathie, 86,000 meters on January 27th
Ron, 82,091 meters on January 29th
HOOYAH!
To compliment our teammates 80K+ rowing, they are in the newly launched LUNAtic boats designed for the oceans

Congratulations, Rick, on achieving 200,000 m in the Virtual Team Challenge and snagging a canoe paddle! May your canoe continue to travel swiftly in these competitive waters!!

80K+ a day ... truly amazing ... who are you people and when do you eat and sleep!? (And, to continue the string ... with what do you pad your rowing seat!)cathie11 wrote:DUCKMARX wrote:To compliment our teammates 80K+ rowing, they are in the newly launched LUNAtic boats designed for the oceansBAZzy wrote: . . . what a great effort on the challenge, an oar-some performance by the team, and some solid individual numbers have been cranked out.

AJ & Kona 2,
First Kona great job with the stats, as usual. Sometimes I think we take you for granted. Nothing could be farther from the truth. We love you for all you do!
AJ,
Amazing graphics for the VTC. I know they kept me motivated to get a paddle even though I missed the first 12 days.
A big woot woot to both of you.
Lunatics, well done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of you people must be robotic maniacs!

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
On the subject of posterior pain...
My erg is an old Model B, which has a more contoured seat than the newer models. I find that it's more comfortable than the flatter seats, but I don't know if it's still available, or if it would even fit the newer models, as the slide on the Model B is much narrower. I don't get the sore bottom that some ergers experience, but I do get numb legs at about 7clicks. When that happens, I drop one foot to the floor for a few strokes, then switch and do the other. Also, I rarely "strap in" to the foot board. I read some debates in the training forum years ago about this, and there seemed to be strong opinions on each side of the issue. Once I tried rowing without straps I got used to it and have done it that way ever since.
This fall I borrowed a couple of ergs from a cardio rehab center which we used in an in house challenge at the school where I work. One of those machines actually had a seat from a lawn tractor (no kidding!) retrofitted to the machine. It was downright cozy, and the kids loved it. I asked the clinic director about it and was told that they did that not because people were uncomfortable, but because they kept falling off the flat seat. The seat was not an offering from C2, but looked like the result of the combined creativity of a counterman at a farm implement dealer and a local welder. Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say.

Cathie, I'm pleased you feel safer in your LUNA-tic ocean rowing boat . . . I'm tickled that you showed your students the graphics .cathie11 wrote:

Since you mentioned Roz Savage I need to say that her Brocade was one of the boats that I used as a reference to design the LUNA-tic Ocean boat (maybe your students can come up with a name for your LUNA-tic Ocean boat ?)
Just the thought of crossing an ocean alone is dismaying. Roz has already crossed the Atlantic and the Pacific. She will begin rowing the Indian Ocean in March. It seems that she is literally rowing around the world
In goggling the Internet I found a good resource for Ocean rowing information: The Ocean Rowing Society. It provides status and links for attempts now at sea and upcoming ocean rows. For example, the 14 member crew of the Britannia III began their attempt to row across the Atlantic today (Jan 31, 2011). They are trying to claim the Blue Riband Trophy of Ocean Rowing.
If you're interested, your students can track their progress or leave them messages on the Atlantic Allum Cup 2011 website. (I'm sure you already know this, but I'm reporting this because I'm fascinated by the men and women who row across oceans.)

Okay, AJ, you are not allowed to come up with any more graphics incentives for this challenge. I have done all I can possibly do, and am really ready for a hot tub and shower and massage and bed now.
The boys really helped cheer me on, and have promised a shoulder and foot massage .
Seriously, though, this has really been a fun challenge, and inspiring to boot. Thanks to the whole team, and especially to AJ and K2 for really going the extra 100 meters to make it so.
A huge congratulations to everyone on the team for your participation, and for pushing yourself to do your best. Woo Hoo! Way to row!

It is an amazing feat that these ocean rowers perform. Of interest these fellow kayakers paddled across the 'Ditch' (Australia to New Zealand) a couple of years back. It was an extremely tough paddle.........and the first time it had been done.
I remember seeing the kayak before they departed and thinking how small it was for something to be taking on the oceans...
Cheers, BBB
