Sorry to hear about your back a-row-ma

Did a 40 minute work-out this evening. 5 minute warm-up and 5 minute cool-down with 30 minutes in the middle (strangely enough!) Total distance of 7,779 metres - I'm happy with that start to the week.

Yesterday, after months of working to get my hypothyroid meds at the right dosage, I finally felt "right" again. Before rowing I felt a little extra free floating anxiety for the work day. That's the extra edge I'm used to using to hammer out a strong workout. When my thyroid is off, I'm too tired to have that extra edge, and it's all I can do to slog through the workout at 2:33 -2:35 pace. Yesterday I did 10K in 49:52.2. That's not a PB, not even for this year, and the first eight minutes were warmup at 2:33 pace. So most of the rest was at about 2:28. I'm looking forward to a spring and summer of getting back to full strength. I still owe Bufflehead a half marathon - maybe when she takes on her marathon! Anybody else want to do a half with me?

Yeah Harly!!!!
I'm glad to hear you are finally on the mend! You too, arowma, Carole, and Cassie! I knew it would only be a matter of time before my times would fall by the wayside! I think that's a great idea to have some folks doing a half marathon while some are doing the whole thing! One big group row on May 7th!

My training will be a little off the rest of this week. Yesterday I did a 10K, tonight I go to the gym for lifting and cross training, and tomorrow morning I need to do a 10K before I take off for London. I won't get to do any rowing in London because I have no idea what kind of rower is at the hotel. It looks quite strange! I'm too close to the marathon to sit on something different and risk an injury. I'll just do a bunch of cross training instead.

It looks like I will get to see something quite spectacular, though! I'm going to try to go see the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race on Sunday. That will be my first ever event of that kind!

Have a great week of rowing! Right then - I'll quack off for now. Unless I'm lucky enough to find internet access, you won't hear from me until next week.
TTFN
Buffle

Well, in an attempt to prepare for the Marathon in May, I set out to row 30K last night. I was having one of the best rows ever, until my 16-year-old daughter called because her car ended up in a ditch. (No one was hurt). Apparently her defroster was working so she pulled over to wipe the windshield off herself, and her car slid on the ice into a ditch.

I ended up just short of 20K when I got the call, so I am going to try the 30K again today. Hopefully I will make it to the finish!

Ok, y'all are probably getting tired of reading my posts!

I successfully rowed my 30k this morning, and I am particularly proud of this because I rowed the 20k late last night so there wasn't a lot of rest in between. The 30k was my longest row so far. I am pretty sure I will be ready to row the Marathon in May, although it will probably still take me 4 hours to do it!

Hi Ritz!
Hey, we never get tired of your posts! You are making great progress! Don't forget to get some rest days in there. Last night I managed a 10K on a rusty C2 here at my hotel. Boy, was it noisy! With some luck, I will try to find the South London IRC tomorrow. That should be fun!
Later,
Buffle

Hmmmm - what training did I do today? Only 1000 meters. But - what a row that was! The folks at the S.L.I.R.C. let me in on the race. Of course, my little boat was lagging way behind all the fast lads that I was sitting with. The good news is, I won a little trophy by default!! Can I help it if I was the only LWT in my age bracket? I'll take it!

What a great day! I'll never be a racer, but it sure was fun trying! Okay, time to get off my cloud - I'm heading home tomorrow. Hope you all had a great week!
The Buffle

Bufflehead - I'm so proud of you! You were brave to sit your skinny butt down on that erg and pull a race with those buff young guys at the SLIRC. More details, please! I'm gonna look for pictures from the race. It would be way cool to have one of you racing.

-Harly

Thanks, Ducks!
I had a fabulous day!! I'm home now, so life will get back to normal. I had my cox for the race take a picture, but it was with a regular old camera, so I'll see what I can come up with. It should be hilarious - nothing like rowing in jeans and long sleeve shirt!
I was able to get a lot of tips from the British champion in my age group - easirower. (Thank goodness she rows in the HWT division! I would have come home empty-handed!) These folks make it look so easy. Rocket Roy and I decided that I should have C2 chop about two feet off the back of my rower since I am so short! Sir Pirate posted the results over on the UK site. Have a look if you want, but no laughing!! I didn't get a chance to have our team name included because I registered after the race. It was all quite last minute, you know!
I did learn one very valuable lesson - I started out way too fast! Who knew? After all, it was my first race and I didn't know any better. I started pulling at about 1:52. That didn't last long! I lost steam pretty quickly and then could barely maintain 2:25. If I would have started out at 2:15, I think I could have done a lot better (maybe).
Enough for now.
The Buffle

Ah, yes, the old fly and die. You get on the erg, heart beating about a million miles an hour. Pull a few strokes and see numbers you've never seen before, and instead of thinking, "slow down", you think "maybe this erg is different", or "maybe I'm really strong today". And then a couple hundred meters into the race, you realize that huge build up of adrenalin that was supposed to get you out from under the hungry tiger, has been completely depleted and you are left trying to keep from loosing your cookies and giving up completely.

Bufflehead, we've ALL done it. It's a lesson it only takes once to learn. I think you are a Trooper Duck for climbing on the erg in your jeans and taking the race and yourself seriously. You do us proud.

-Harly

Today I did the half marathon. Time was 99 minutes and 54 seconds. I'm always aiming tot keep the half marathon below 100 minutes. I'm preparing for the summertrip with my rowingclub. We are going to row in France, everyday 30 - 35 km and I want to be sure that I can handle this, a week long. Thus, I'm doing the long pieces at the moment as additional training for pieces on the water.

Ank

Ho,
After 10 days off, I did just 2000m this aft at an easier drag than am used to.
Chiro unlocked my left sacroiliac joint a couple times, but I'd apparently torn a bit of the gluteal insertion. She blamed the shovelling I'd been doing a few days prior, but took me off rowing. Never been to a chiropractor before, so that part was interesting!
My husband had to plant the rest of the 106 trees, and I hung out with my daughter for the rest of spring break. I was a good little duck and followed most of the chiro's instructions, even giving it a little longer to heal than I might have otherwise.
Not yet 100%, and working a 12 hr tomorrow, so maybe Friday I can get back at the rowing again, slowly... metres for my duckies.
Cheers everyone.

Arowma - I am glad to hear that you are on the mend!

Ank - Great job on the half marathon! Hopefully, someday I will get my time below 100 minutes, but I am not thinking it is gonna happen any time soon!
