plantar fasciitis
plantar fasciitis
I just received my Concept 2 Model E and worked out a bit last night. I feel like my plantar fasciitis is coming back after just one workout. Does anyone else have this? I know I have 30 days to try this rower and I've wanted one for over 5 years. I am hoping there is something I can do to alleviate this and still work up to where I want to be with rowing. I am an exercise instructor and have had plantar fasciitis off and on for over 10 years but really haven't had any symptoms for the last 2 years until I worked out on the rower. Any advice?
Re: plantar fasciitis
Valerie, here is a post on Plantar Faciitis. I have had it also, and it helped to not slide foreward far enough to raise your heels off the footrest. Start off slowly.

Re: plantar fasciitis
One possibile solution (as suggested in one of the responses in the link above) is to have a wedge under the heel to raise it a bit. A gel pad was mentioned in that response, but it should be something that quite firm or you lose energy compressing the pad.paul s wrote:Valerie, here is a post on Plantar Faciitis. Re: plantar fasciitis
Valerie- I have actually started rowing because of PF. I had to stop running because of it, and even cycling was making it worse (I think because I was standing up an really powering down on the pedals). Anyway, I don't know if you have tried all the suggestions for improving PF (orthotics, night splints, rolling your foot on a frozen water bottle, stretching the calf muscles, anti inflammatories etc) but I think the most important thing would be to make sure the shoes that you row in have a really good orthotic.
So far my PF hasn't been affected too much by my rowing but then again I haven't been rowing for very long each day either (5-8 minutes) LOL

Re: plantar fasciitis
I am now walking on Birkenstock Sandals and Inserts for my hiking boots - they feel weird but feel oh so good for the pain relief. Soaking and stretching my feet and calves both morning and night is making a world of difference for me.
Your results may very. C2 being delivered a week from today, hoping to be "over this" by then.

Re: plantar fasciitis
As above, an injury on the Erg as a result of your heels coming of the foot plates at the catch . If you work on flexibilty you should be able to keep your heels on the plates of a model D. Did some running for a few months and I thought this would make things worse, but it made things better. Do lots of stretching. Had some mild PF soreness in the lft foot but it has since got better. Not a nice injury to have and it tends to linger on for months before it's gone.

I also have pf but not severe.Valerie5 wrote:I just received my Concept 2 Model E and worked out a bit last night. I feel like my plantar fasciitis is coming back after just one workout. I find what I do when not on the erg makes all the difference. Foot massage, exercise, stretch, and most of all, no bare feet or sock feet indoors. Ever. (except for sleeping & showering, of course). Wear my indoor birkenstocks as soon as I take off my shoes. What a difference. Good runners with inserts on the erg.
I can't run with the pf. Great pain shooting up the back of my calves before any distance. But I can row!
Re: plantar fasciitis
I love my rower but I've developed pretty bad plantar fasciitis over the last six months that I've had the rower. I've probably had plantar fasciitis for some time before that but the rowing is aggravating it to the point where some days I can't walk without gritting my teeth every step.
I've started doing physio treatments to break up some of the scar tissue and have orthotics on order but in the interim I've started doing Achilles tendon and calf stretches. Something that is also helpful is having a couple of balls; tennis ball, and two harder rubber balls, one about the size of a golf ball and one in between the two sizes and rolling them across the soft tissue of the feet before and after rowing.
Thanks for the suggestion of making sure that the heel remains planted, I had the straps set for my recommended shoe size but have moved the setting so the straps are closer to the ankle, it might be time to move them closer.

Re: plantar fasciitis
I tore my feet up pretty bad doing a boxing/bag class. Both feet achilles tendonitis and PF. It was difficult to walk for over a year. Stretching daily is the only thing to really help it. The best stretch I found was in the mornings before getting out of bed.
Lay on your tummy like you are going to do a man's style push-ups. Flex your toes up toward your knee. I typically would hear my alarm, hit the snooze and then stretch until the alarm beeped again. EVERY.SINGLE.DAY.
and when you can, use a step or curb to flex your foot.
Ortho doc told me that this particular injury takes a LONG time to fully heal (9 months is common) provided you don't re-injure it.
