I suppose because you already know how to row, you don't recognize what I have learned about how to row as training.

But, heck, as far as I can tell, and as you know well with your rowing OTW, it is much more basic, and therefore important, to know how to row than it is to just haul anchor and work hard.

I am now getting back to doing "pieces" again, so (I suppose) you will again recognize what I am doing as training.

This change of heart, and opinion about what I am doing, has nothing to do with me.

It has to do with you.

Truth is: I now row well (13 SPI) at low drag (120 df.).

For distance rowing of the longest sort, that's 1:44 @ 24 spm (13 SPI).

I couldn't have imagined rowing that well five years ago.

Over a FM, if I can indeed get there, 1:44 @ 24 spm is 10 seconds per 500m better than I could do back in 2002-2003.

Pulling 13 SPI at 24 spm and 120 df., I am now in a 4-to-1 ratio.

:o :o

No more cross-training or starving for a couple of months.

Just a FM a day of hard distance rowing, building the rate from 24 spm up to 30 spm.

I _love_ the huge distance stroke.

_Very_ long and quick on the drive, very relaxed and elegant on the return.

Distance rowing at 13 SPI is stroking as well as any lightweight of any age, bar none.

Your natural stroking power is the most important thing about your rowing.

By and large, it determines everything else and therefore sets your potential.

I'll enter the distance "pieces" that I do in the 50s heavyweight rankings until Jan. 25, 2011, and then in the 60s heavyweight rankings after that.

The best 50s hwt distance times so far this year are these:

50s hwt times for 2011

FM 2:36:35 (Crawford)
HM 1:15:25 (Crawford)
60min 167941 (Crawford)
10K 34:49 (Donnelly)
30min 8743 (Donnelly)
6K 20:36 (Carpenter)
5K 16:48 (Marullo)

Not much else to discuss about my training.

Training is an opportunity to get better.

So, my training is done.

I am now as good as I can be.

Now, my rowing from day to day is just working out the consequences of my (technical) improvement.

I _can't_ improve my fitness.

My fitness has been maximal for a decade.

Don't lock this thread. As far as I can tell, Ranger pretty much stays here for his postings. If you lock the thread he will just start to clutter up other threads with his comments about himself and his "training." This is what he's done in the past and will do again. Let this thread be his place to brag and even denigrate others. Don't most of us know pretty much anything he says is hyperbole? Don't respond if you don't want to fuel it, but frankly your responses are what make this thread highly entertaining and even in some cases educational. I don't mean what Ranger writes. I rarely read what he posts since it's the same stuff it's been for years and, as much as he claims otherwise, has nothing concrete to indicate what he's doing or that any of his claims about his current conditioning or ability are true. However, the comments from others are often funny and, in the case particularly of NavHaz, often educational too.

2. Funny that you say you row well at 13 spi when the results of your "race" show you couldn't even maintain more than 11 spi for more than a 100 meters at a time. :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

Clip from video shot from the stands, I think with about 400m to go in his race. I've slowed it down, thus the funky audio which I deliberately didn't mute as it's still sort of intelligible. Note the major wobble around the 30-second mark. I >think< this is the 2:35-pace stroke, followed by a second slow one, after which business resumes.

I must admit I don't 'get' the twisting of the handle on the recovery; moreover the 'praying mantis' left wrist is back, on steroids; so too is a significant amount of head-tossing on the drive, as shown by the position of the cap visor. Perhaps this is what has been meant by a "sweep stroke"?!

There's no intention to lock the thread, we just want folks to stop replying to him. Let him spout whatever he likes (without the ad hominem attacks) but don't rise to the crud he writes, let him live silently alone in here while we get on with discussing our training, our successes and other stuff on the rest of the forum.

Everyone understands the only part of the bet with Henry that remains is the part where you pay him. You lost the bet, you knew you lost the bet then and you know the bet is lost now.

I think at this point it isn't the $1000 it is the embarassment of admitting you lost. Althought after the BIRC incident I should think there is anything too embarrasing for you to do :twisted:
