Re: A memorial row: an hour for Moose
Jan, Thank you so much for this additional information. And for your insight and perspective. Truly, there could be no better way to remember him here than the picture you have thought of -Kona2 wrote:I received an email from Ginny, Mrs. Moose, tonight. You know we could all count on Darryl's disciplined approach to rowing - that one hour row was in there like clockwork. After a few days of no postings, and no message saying he was out adventuring, I sent him an email to see if all was well in Moose World.
Darryl went out for a short canoe outing on Nov 2nd by himself - and something went terribly wrong. When Darryl did not return later in the day, his wife drove to the lake and found his car. She called search and rescue. Darryl's body was found the next day, an apparent drowning. While no one except Darryl knows what happened, the conjecture is that he put the canoe in the water and maybe was going to go back to his car and get his paddle and PFD, when perhaps the canoe drifted or he stepped off a ledge.
Ginny has lost her best friend and bestest paddling partner. She says that she is working on remembering all the good times paddling, loving and living with him for over 32 years. I know our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her, and to his family. We have lost a virtual teammate - and there's nothing virtual about loss. It hurts.
I propose that we do a memorial row for Moose - his usual rowing session was 60 minutes (5 to 15 extra if we were in a challenge). Row what you can, when you can - and remember the Moose-isms. Somewhere in the heavens, he is talking canoe....and dang - who knew he'd be the first Luna-Tic on the moon (someone has to set up base camp, and we know of no one better!).
I am reminded of the ending dialogue from the movie Secondhand Lions, "(he) really lived."Somewhere in the heavens, he is talking canoe....and dang - who knew he'd be the first Luna-Tic on the moon (someone has to set up base camp, and we know of no one better!).
We love you, Moose!

My condolences to Ginny.
Also to the Luna-tics team and erging community, on Darryl's passing. He seemed like a really nice person.

Re: An hour for the 'Duluth Moose'
I’m off on a walk tomorrow, 52 kilometres along the Great North Walk (some of the sections I did last year on the way to Newcastle!) Probably a case of under-prepared and over-ambitious as usual, but what the heck! So I’m staying off the rower today as I’m leaving at 2am on Saturday morning, hoping to finish at 7pm (oddly enough at the quaint Brooklyn pub!)...... Not sure how I’ll go for a row on Sunday; might be flat out on the couch!
But I’ll keep the ‘Moose’ in my thoughts along the way given he was a lover of the ‘great outdoors’ and that will be my tribute to him......still hard too believe!
Walk progress can be viewed at this link (map will show up when I start). It is a very pretty, but steep part of the Great North Walk....

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
“I Am Always With You”
When I am gone, release me, let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.
You mustn't tie yourself to me with too many tears,
But be thankful we had so many good years.
I gave you my love, and you can only guess
How much you've given me in happiness.
I thank you for the love that you have shown,
But now it is time I traveled on alone.
So grieve for me awhile, if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
That it is only for a while that we must part,
So treasure the memories within your heart.
I won't be far away, for life goes on,
And if you need me, call, and I will come.
Though you can't see or touch me, I will be near,
And if you listen with your heart, you will hear
All my love around you soft and clear.
And then, when you come this way alone
I'll greet you with a smile, and a "Welcome Home."

I'll count myself as a temporary Luna-Tic today. I saw Bob Spenger's posts and his blog entry so I rowed 14522m in an hour for Moose.
