So for BIRC, I'll happily take any of these options:
i) you "miss" your plane
ii) you sleep in and miss your race
iii) you can't make weight and have to race as a heavy
iv) you can't make weight and decide not to race
v) you have to sweat for five hours to make weight
vi) you go and do your first 500 at 1:34 then blow up
vii) you go and do your first 500 at 1:39 then blow up
viii) most unlikely of all, you don't hit any of the performance standards you set (which is almost certain) but then go on to be gracious in defeat and to your fellow competitors.
Sure, some of these could happen. Indeed, I could miss my plane, row as a heavyweight, have to sweat some to make weight, and so forth.
Sometimes, shit happens.
But again, overall, your response here is carping, small-minded, unsympathetic, aggressive, and pretty much, unjustified.
For the last two years, I have the best 2K in the 55s lwts, not Roy Brook. I have two BIRC golds. Roy has never even medalled at BIRC. I have the BIRC championship record in the 55s lwts, not Roy Brook. I am in great shape and am ready to race. I have rowed a WR at BIRC, which won me the Millennium Cup. In all probability, I will have my second WR row at BIRC this year. I have six sub-6:30 rows in competition. Roy has never pulled better than 6:38.
My race preparation is coming along just fine. My weight is good. I feel great. All systems are go.
I am now rowing well (13 SPI) at low drag (120 df.).
This increases my mechanical and technical effectiveness and efficiency--enormously--given the same effort.
I will race in close to a 3-to-1 ratio at 31-33 spm.
