Limitimg the travel of the seat on the rail

Post by gregsmith01748 » October 26th, 2010, 9:01 am

Hi,
I am battling a very sore knee and I have noticed that sometimes I overextend
Or over compress my knees. Is there a recommended way to limit the travel of the seat
on the rail to help me work on technique to avoid destroying my knees? At the extreme,
I am concerned that my doctor may ban me from the erg, so I'd like to know how to fix the
seat in place so I can do trunk and arms only workouts.

Right now I am using a pair of neoprene padded bar clamps, one in front and one in back
but I am afraid they will hurt the rail or rollers.

Any ideas are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

To keep the seat from banging into the back legs of my model B, I just wrapped a small bungee cord tightly around the rail. No glue, tape or other stuff required.

Good luck with your recovery!

By 'clamping' the rail to stop the seat, you're only letting the problem go untreated. Over-compression is not because of the fact the seat rolls up that far, it's due to where you catch. Work on controlling your recovery and not over-compressing. You shouldn't lunge forward for more reach, and as soon as you see (in a mirror to your side) that your knees are perpendicular to the ground just take another stroke! It will feel harder to keep the rate down with the quicker transition at the catch, but it is much better for your knees. Just focus on slowing the leg portion of the recovery to get the rate down.

I'm using the clamps as a training aid. Basically, it provides some pretty serious feedback that I am overcompressing. I find that I hit the stop about 1 out of 30 or 40 strokes. I'm hopeful that I can lose the clamp soon, and keep the habit.
