BTW, in the Veterans race at the Head of the Charles, Jim Dietz was really laboring physically when he came by the cameras.

Jack Meyer blew by him like he was standing still and then beat him to the finish line by 45 seconds.

In some cases, I guess being tough as nails doesn't help.

Meyer has WR calibre speed on the erg.

That might explain what happened today.

Dietz rows beautifully, but rowing is not just about technique.

Why doesn't Dietz come out to indoor rowing events and show us his big engine?

Can he still pull sub-7 for 2K OTErg?

By the time he is Dietz's age (61), Mike VB's 2K OTErg might also be floating up over 7:00.

As Meyer and Anderson just demonstrated, at the moment, that's (at least) five seconds per 500m off the pace in the diviis.

Nice 60min on the Kurt Kinetic at 19 MPS, HR 151 bpm, after erging.

Yes, we've seen your race results, reported by the PM4. Its verdict: you are getting older and slower, and are never going to approach what you claim is your potential, or even most of your predictions.

So what will it be at BIRC?

Come on.

Get real.

Pulling a lwt 6:16 at 60 OTErg is a _whole_ lot better than some passing moments with Salma Hayek.

Women come and go.

A lwt 6:16 at 60 OTErg is forever.

BTW, Mike VB has been saying for some time now that his goal is to pull 2:00 pace (19:20) at the Head of the Charles.

In perfect conditions, this year, he missed it by five seconds per 500m.

At BIRC 2010, it will be interesting to see how far I fall short of my goal of 6:20--if at all.

If I miss my goal by as much as Mike VB missed his goal, 5 seconds per 500m, I'll pull 6:40.

I suppose we need to ask this:

How could Mike VB be so deluded about what he was capable of?

I thought he tested himself, rigorously, quantitatively, by the clock, in multiple races, in training, etc.?

Go figure.

By my calculations, Mike is closer to his target than you are to yours! If you pull 6:40, it will be a sizable improvement on recent results, especially for the beginning of the season.

You'll also note that Mike didn't predict anything, just outlined a goal. You're the idiot who makes predictions and completely fails to achieve them. The only WR you'll be putting out of reach is the one for the most idiotic posts, where you'll get the record for both quantity and quality

I haven't sharpened to race, as I am doing now, since 2003.

In 2006, I pulled 6:29.7, without even sharpening for it.

You get about a dozen seconds over 2K from hard sharpening.

Since then, I have also ironed out my technical problems and have learned to row well (12.5 SPI) at low drag (120 df.).

So, I would think that 6:20 is a very solid estimate for my performance at BIRC 2010, if I can race fully sharpened, rowing well (12.5 SPI), at low drag (120 df.).

Really?

On the erg, Mike thought he would pull a 55s lwt WR.

At WIRC 2010, he pulled 6:50, missing it by a dozen seconds, three seconds per 500m.

OTW, at the Head of the Charles, Mike missed his target by five seconds per 500m, the equivalent of 20 seconds over 2K.

Why is Mike such a flaming fantasist?

Doesn't he respect reality?

He needs to get real.

I don't know about you, but I'm tired of his lying.

What's his problem?

Can't he handle the truth?

If he doesn't have what it takes, he should just admit it.

No reason to lie, just to deceive himself and others.

Self-inflation is inexcusable.

Mike should be humble and self-effacing.

That's the only respectable demeanor.

@Ranger:

"If it turns out that I am now doing..."
"If it happens to occur that I can comfortably hold 1:35 to 1700m ..."

Surely you must examine your capabilities in some sort or fashion since otherwise you won't be able to pace yourself.
What indications from actually rowed pieces do you have that lead you to believe that you might be able to
hold say 1.37.5 for 2K?

Hey, remember how you did last time you were able to get to WIRC? Brave talk about winning the heavyweight race rowing as a lightweight? You almost did it, you were only about 30 seconds off the pace

6:29.7 to 7:04.3 in just a few short weeks, all without even preparing for it

19 MPS. That's haulin' 42 mph.

No trainer for me today. I hit the deep woods single track for a fun 90 minute mountain bike ride. Here's picture of the gps track on Google Earth. 7.8 miles of roots and rocks in rich autumn color. Stunning at times. HR avg 140. Can't wait to get out for more. Ahhhh...the off season. No racing for 6 more months. Recharge-rebuild-reinvigorate.
