That'd be a nice session. Who would it be "fine" for? Sure as hell ain't going to be you, as you'd be lucky to do one.ranger wrote:Yea.
For 20 x 500m, perhaps even for 40 x 500m, 1:35 @ 33 spm (12.5 SPI) is going to be just fine.
_Very_ relaxed stuff.
Well over a 2-to-1 ratio, perhaps as high as 2.5-to-1.
Once I get those 500s done, then all I need to 4 x 1K, 1:35 @ 33 spm, i.e., a few 1Ks at the same rate and pace, and I am ready to row 6:20.

Re: Ranger's training thread
BTW, at BIRC 2010, if I find it comfortable to hold 1:35 @ 33 spm (12.5 SPI) until 1700m and therefore have enough left for a big kick, I might have a chance to break the 55s _heavyweight_ WR, rowing as a lightweight, two months shy of 60 years old.
Cool!
This year, the best 55s lwts, MIke VB, and Rocket Roy, if he races, will have a hard time pulling 6:50.
60s lightweights will have a hard time pulling sub-7:00.
I will be a 60s lwt for WIRC 2011.

Pulling 1:35 @ 33 spm (12.5 SPI), I only need a tad over 50 strokes for a 500m, _very_ controlled stuff.
1:34 @ 32 spm (13 SPI) is 10 MPS.

Re: Ranger's training thread
No way will you get 2K done at 1:35. You should set your sights on 1:39.5 and pull a 6:38. I think you can do a 6:38 if you aren't stupid about pacing it.ranger wrote:BTW, at BIRC 2010, if I find it comfortable to hold 1:35 @ 33 spm (12.5 SPI) until 1700m and therefore have enough left for a big kick, I might have a chance to break the 55s _heavyweight_ WR, rowing as a lightweight, two months shy of 60 years old.

Re: Ranger's training thread
In a session, 20 x 500m, paddle a 500m in between, I think I'll do the 500s, 1:35 @ 33 spm (12.5 SPI), without getting much over my anaerobic threshold.ausrwr wrote:you'd be lucky to do one.
I'll end each 500m right about 175 bpm.
I'll recover completely between 500s, with my HR falling back to 120 bpm.
My anaerobic threshold is 172 bpm.
Top-end UT2 is 145 bpm.
So this will be a nice AT workout for loosening up the top end of my heart rate.
No other 55s lwt can do 8 x 500m (3:30 rest) at much better than 1:38.
No other 60s lwt can do 8 x 500m (3:30 rest) at much better than 1:42.
20 x 500m is done at 2K, 8 x 500m + 3/4.
No other 55s lwt can do 20 x 500m, paddle a 500m in between, at much better than 1:42.
No other 60s lwt can do 20 x 500m, paddle a 500m in between, at much better than 1:46.
Even a paltry 8 x 500m, 1:35 @ 33 spm (12.5 SPI), predicts a 6:32 2K, plenty fast to blow away Rocket Roy's 55s lwt WR by a _huge_ margin, even though I am only a couple of months shy of 60.
As he approaches 60, Rocket Roy will have a hard time pulling 6:50, _waaaay_ off Brian Bailey's 60s lwt WR of 6:42.

7:04.3. That was the result last time you made such an attempt you're much better now, maybe you could go sub-7:00 this timeranger wrote:BTW, at BIRC 2010, if I find it comfortable to hold 1:35 @ 33 spm (12.5 SPI) until 1700m and therefore have enough left for a big kick, I might have a chance to break the 55s _heavyweight_ WR, rowing as a lightweight, two months shy of 60 years old.

Feels like 33 degrees F. on the Charles right now.
Mike VB is warming up for his race (in a half an hour).
40 degrees F., wind from the west at 10 MPH.
Ouch.
May the force (curve) be with you.

Hey, is anyone out there getting the live webcast from the Head of the Charles?
I have flash player, but I am not getting the feed.
Am I doing something wrong?
I got it the last few years.

They haven't begun the live feed yet. The first competitor leaves the chute in the Basin in 29 minutes.

Nice work Rich. If you have no hope of being able to argue on facts, just go straight to the ad hominem attack.ranger wrote:Nay-sayers are dumb-ass vermin, scum of the earth.ausrwr wrote:That'd be a nice session. And as you've descended to ad hominem, it's interesting to me for me to descend as well and to ask what made you such an arsehole. By your own accounts, you had an idyllic childhood, have a successful career, and a family that adores you.
What's your excuse?
Lack of success in sport from 14 to 50? Your inability to break Roy's "soft WR"? Or simply the fact that you're not given the respect you feel that you deserve?
As it stands, your DEEDS are worthy of some respect. You are a former WR holder. That's damn special. You will in all likelihood be one once again when you turn 60, as long as you can weigh in as a lightweight and row 2k without stopping.
But as a person, you deserve absolutely no respect whatsoever. You are a hypocrite. A braggart. A liar. You are without respect for the achievements of anyone but yourself. You have reached such low standing in the sport that you claim to care about that it would be very difficult to find anyone in that sport who believes a single thing you say.
So why not get back to the basement, train your arse off, and go to BIRC and post a time? Let that do the talking. Not the hours every day that you spend on here whilst not training at all.
Stick to abusing others, as that's far more of a window into what you're doing than what you purport to be doing in training. We can easily tell that you're nowhere near what you say by virtue of the fact that your abuse becomes ever more hysterical whenever you're questioned.
You are not the greatest of all time. YThat's not nay-saying. That's stating a fact.
Re: Ranger's training thread
Ah, I've got the feed from the Head of the Charles now, no problem.
Good luck, Mike!
Dang, it's still dark here in Ann Arbor, and Ann Arbor is in the same time zone as Boston.
Unfortunately, the veterans race is at the same wretched time, tomorrow.
Too bad.
It's going to be beautiful and sunny by noon--55 degrees F.

Nice 60min on the Kurt Kinetic at 19 MPH, HR 151, after erging.
Another session, just like this one (OTErg, then OTBike) this afternoon before dinner.
