Re: Ranger's training thread
A max HR from Ranger would mean RACING to find it and we all know how racing ruins your training......
Max here is 196, however I have to say this is for such a short interval for me it has very limited use, when I go there I find I'm working so hard that I have stopped breathing ! 186 is sustainable for minutes so is more useful to have something that has a more pridictable duration that I can use in a 2K. 196 is timed for a few strokes before the finish line.

Re: Ranger's training thread
What's this I read? ranger's afraid to take his massively trained cardiovascular system to max???
maybe he should drop the erg and take up flower arrangement or something...
Hey, Rich... BTW: Nice choice of Head Race .... 3 (point what?) kilometers.... !!
You're quite a distance guy! Talk about taking it easy on yourself.
If you don't average 2:10/500 meters for 65% of the 5k distance... what will that mean about your statement earlier this year that you're already on tap for 1:58s for 5k ???
I am also interested in why your focus is on people who have retired from racing when you feel like comparing your efforts to someone... Is it because you're about to retire too?

Re: Ranger's training thread
Hell, I saw a spike in the 190s like that - at about age 83 (doing intervals) - but I didn't consider it encouragement. In fact it scared the crap out of me and inhibited my performance at the C-B a couple of days later.mrfit wrote:) I knew at 15' of that I was ready so ... roct10.png
Nice update to the stat. I had only seen 188 in racing this year and had some feeling I might have lost a few beats. Nope. Same as age 35.

Not only is the course short at the Head of the Grand.mikvan52 wrote:Talk about taking it easy on yourself.
I am going to row easily, too.
Just a little "stylin'" at 24-26 spm.
That should do it.
2:05 pace?

At the Head of the Grand, if I row 2:05 @ 24 spm, just stroking easily, I think the result will be _very_ good for a first head race, don't you?mikvan52 wrote:If you don't average 2:10/500 meters for 65% of the 5k distance... what will that mean about your statement earlier this year that you're already on tap for 1:58s for 5k ???
10 MPS
7.4 SPI
You don't do any better.

No.
As turns out, I'll probably work until I am 66.
My investments are doing too well not to take the opportunity to max out my returns so that I retire with a huge pile of cash.
Over the last 10 years, the stock market made nothing, nada.
I made 300%.
I am now in a great position to make another killing.

Re: Ranger's training thread
Your training shows you what you can an cannot do. So: It is disingenuous for you to say "if I row"...ranger wrote:At the Head of the Grand, if I row 2:05 @ 24 spm, just stroking easily, I think the result will be _very_ good for a first head race, don't you?mikvan52 wrote:If you don't average 2:10/500 meters for 65% of the 5k distance... what will that mean about your statement earlier this year that you're already on tap for 1:58s for 5k ???

ranger
Are you going to attempt it or not?
Also: The distance you will be rowing is a "baby" Head.. or a "Tin"~Head
So: No: rowing 3+ k at a certain pace isn't equivalent to doing another 3-4 500's more..
You will not do 2:05 pace avg anyway. Your form is excellent for the erg but not for sculling.
... and: (!) I meant
"retired from racing the erg"
Re: Ranger's training thread
No, I probably won't do 2:05 pace, but I'll try; and if I don't, it won't be because of my technique, although, Lord knows, my technique can certainly get a lot better.mikvan52 wrote:You will not do 2:05 pace avg anyway. Your form is excellent for the erg but not for sculling.
It will just be because I have decided to take it easy (24-26 spm).
I suspect that I'll rate 34 spm for 2k OTW, just as I do OTErg, when I push it to the max, fully prepared, HR 190 bpm.
On Sunday, I suspect my HR won't get over 160 bpm.

Note to other readers than TSO:
Do not take ranger's word on how fast I row on the water... He doesn't care to be accurate.
This year I have sculled (In a 1x) 1:50.0x pace for 1k.
Want to see a distance over 5k at 2:04.x pace?
and ranger has done....?..... (no report, as usual)
{subject shift}
Now we see Rich qualify his "if I do" with "well, I probably won't try". How lame.
Rich goes on and on about needing to train for BIRC and putting the 1x on the back burner...
So then we see that on less than 10 days of erg training since March, I can sit down and pull a sub 18 minute 5k...While, in the meantime: ranger won't post a single one... even after training all spring for the big conquest of all records up to the "FM"...
KInda makes Rich look a little silly,IMO... Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/Gotta train that erg/

Re: Ranger's training thread
In a 1x, I think the best way to "try" a first race is to row as well as you can, concentrating on technique rather than physical effort.mikvan52 wrote:Note to other readers than TSO:

Do you mean to say that you have not even done a half dozen 5k TTs on the water this year. What kind of bogus training plan is that? You were up-da-country with The Windbagger for a couple months!!!ranger wrote:In a 1x, I think the best way to "try" a first race is to row as well as you can, concentrating on technique rather than physical effort.mikvan52 wrote:Note to other readers than TSO:

Pretty lazy, I'd say, for someone who is on a campaign to "Kick Dietz' ass at the HOCR" !
Re: Ranger's training thread
Mike--
As I understand, you rowed 28 spm in your race this week-end.
That's impressive.
This is 28 spm, no?

As a coach, you need a more nnnuuurtttttuuurrrrinnnnnnggggg attitude.
You're a little too harsh on the girls.
They'll burst into tears, and then what?

Remove all non sequiturs... and such.
I have no idea what you are trying to say.
Before you get too far afield please answer:
