What erg races you can win doesn't have anything to do with me specifically.

If you are pulling 6:50, you're not going to beat anyone who is very good.

(snip)
Dennis just pulled a 2K at altitude equivalent to a 6:40 2k.

I don't know what I will do at BIRC, but my goal is 6:20.

Good luck with it, though, and I hope our paths _do_ cross soon.

It would be fun to race head to head, toe to toe.
Trying to be a jerk doesn't change anything.
I am the current World Champion on the erg for our category... partially because you are unable to prepare to race
(ranger= no show in Boston 2010 = because of weight issues)

Please provide a link for Hastings' recent 2k.
I can't seem to find it.

Good luck on the Grand.

BTW: I feel if you go out trying to do a 6:20 (1:35 pace) when your best recent 500 is 1:30 is foolhardy.
Hope you become a little more reasonable in the meantime.
Double the "D" add 5 seconds yields 1:40 pace for your potential..

Oh, and where's that screen shot of a UT 5k while wearing your new HR belt...?
And your weight when you wake up in the morning is...?

The days left for events like BIRC 2010 must be limited.

Couldn't justify flying half way round the world for an event like this when it could be done over the internet these days.

On ADSL here but as soon as we get fibre it could include high resolution live streaming video and all the race data to the race "Venue" in front of those organising the event. Must be better for the planet and in any case in the not to distant future we will have no choice but to run an event like this anyway.

Since the eponymous subject of this thread won't post 8 x 500 results (because he hasn't got any) I thought I'd post these:

Image
Image

This is 8 x 500m/ paddle a 500 in between. There's an extra 5 seconds' rest between each of the 500s to make the business of tracking them easier.

01] 1:35.7 r29
5 seconds rest, 500m in 3:00.2, 5 seconds rest (3:10.2 rest)

02] 1:35.4 r29
5 seconds rest, 500m in 2:52.2, 5 seconds rest (3:02.2 rest)

03] 1:35.1 r29
5 seconds rest, 500m in 2:46.7, 5 seconds rest (2:56.7 rest)

04] 1:34.2 r31
5 seconds rest, 500m in 2:47.5, 5 seconds rest (2:57.5 rest)

05] 1:30.0 r33
5 seconds rest, 500m in 3:10.3, 5 seconds rest (3:20.3 rest)

06] 1:30.1 r33
5 seconds rest, 500m in 3:16.3, 5 seconds rest (3:26.3 rest)

07] 1:30.1 r34
5 seconds rest, 500m in 3:17.7, 5 seconds rest (3:27.7 rest)

08] 1:30.0 r35

I make that 1:32.6 average pace on the 8 x 500 at an average 31.6m spm, with an average 3:17.3 mostly active recovery (500s paddled at an average 3:07.3 plus 10 seconds passive rest). 14.2 spi, for what it's worth. And as the rather serious negative splitting shows, I'm capable of quite a bit faster on average. Especially if I allow the rating to rise.....

Anyhow, >I'm< not the one claiming to be ready to row 6:20 at BIRC. But it should be interesting to see how Fraudger beats whatever I row by 20 seconds, as he's said he's going to do.

Hey Nav, make sure you post Rangers BIRC 2010 2K result here as soon as it's available, I want to beat it within a few days of you posting it.

I have just deleted a recent post that basically disparaged the U of M - at least their mascot. My apologies to the U of M people as a group. I got too carried away with the joke and didn't think about the fact that I was wielding too broad a brush - a practice that I have complained about in other posters.

With a little forethought, I could have expressed the same joke in a different way that would not have been insulting to the Wolverines as a group. Hindsight - always too late.

Bob S.

P.S. By the way - this is a voluntary apology. I had not yet received any complaints.

It's a fair criticism, but I don't think it means the end of BIRC - it is, after all, the British championships, so while it would be a poorer event without international competitors, it would still be BIRC. Events like EIRC or WIRC would suffer much more.

Carl--

No need to post this result.

It will be included in the BIRC results, in the BIRC catalogue of championship records, and in the C2 list of WRs--if things go well, permanently.

If I pull a lwt 6:20, as I think I will, it will never be beaten.

The central focus of my sharpening and racing, I think, should be on rate.

Come what may, I think I should rate 36 spm when I race.

That is, I now need to practice a range of stroking powers, with something in the mid-range of my stroking power -(10-13 SPI) being all I need to pull 6:16.

At 36 spm, 6:16 is 11.7 SPI.

With a drive of .55 seconds, as mine is now when I am rowing at low drag (118 df.), 36 spm is done in a gorgeously exact 2-to-1 ratio.

.55 seconds for the drive.

1.1 seconds for the recovery.

Dance to the Music.

Rock on.

Carl--

If you can train yourself to pull 6:20, that will be a _very_ nice result, even for a 40s heavweight.

For last year, 6:20 would have put you in the top 15 in the 40s heavyweight rankings.

Nah.

I don't have any short-term goals.

:D :D

I am just doing the best I can, given where I am in my training toward my ultimate potential.

Just wanted to highlight this for those who tend to skim the thread. The process of backing off continues; earlier we had a flirtation with high drag (don't be surprised to see that one again), and now we're toying with lowering SPI. Any guesses on what else may be sacrificed?
