Ranger's training thread
Re: Ranger's training thread
If I were you Prof, I'd stop trying to talk about exercise physiology. It's making you look even more of a moron which, believe me, is quite a feat.
You have no idea whatsoever do you?

Yesterdays 10 mile TT result, stiff headwind did 25.32, there was an 80 year old slightly faster, effin amazing.

In my youth I did some time trialing and I always hated headwinds. That table is interesting. It would be fun to hustle Ranger into another bet. He would have to do a 25 mile TT in the time given in the table on his bike. I would have to do the time for a 73 year old for a trike riding my trike. Whoever failed to make the time would have to pay. The last time I made a bet with Ranger it involved both of us going for a world record in the marathon. I won the bet. Ranger was reluctant to pay up (a hat) but eventually did. If the bet had been for one thousand dollars I am sure I would be in line with Henry waiting for the payment. By the way, here is a photo of one of my trikes:
added later: Here is another one of my trikes:
Great looking machines, never seen one before, some of my TTs have trikes racing, but nothing like that!
What time do you thnk you could do a 25?
Cheers

Inside the Head of the maestro... strange self-doubt is going on as he speaks, and speaks and speaks...
Instead of revisiting all that "stuff"... WHy not sit down and do a 5k as I described earlier this afternoon? Just as a workout?

I thinkI'm scared out of my wits! I been challenged again, so I'll just blather my fool head off.
My guess is that I'm scared out of my wits! I been challenged again, so I'll just blather my fool head off.
But that (why)I'm scared out of my wits! I been challenged again, so I'll just blather my fool head off.
Before the year is up, I thinkI'm scared out of my wits! I been challenged again, so I'll just blather my fool head off.
I (won't) do the row (because) I'm scared out of my wits! I been challenged again, so I'll just blather my fool head off.

It's about 6 pm local time... TIme to get on the erg. I'm going to warm up for 20' or so and then go out at a steady 28 spm and 1:49 wearing a HR monitor... Just a workout..
The pink elephants are probably dancing up a storm in Ann Arbor at this hour...

Have fun with the workout. I have been avoiding the erg but sooner or later the river will freeze so I will have to face the music. BTW, I'll be watching you and Joe at HOCR if they do the webcast again. Usually there is a conflict with the Head of the Grand but they are different dates this year. We joke that the people who aren't good enough for the HOG have to go to the HOCR. Heh, heh. I'm pretty sure there will be no webcast of the HOG.

Re: Ranger's training thread
Everyone over 40 years old is a veteran. Back in the days before carbon, aero bars, disk wheels, etc. the Vets Time Trial Assoc (VTTA) came up with a set of tables that have the "standard" times for bicycles (men), bicycles (ladies), tricycles (men), etc for 10 miles, 25 miles, 50 miles, 100 miles for each age of the fifty ages up to 90 (it's the rider's age on the day of the event).ranger wrote:What does "age group standard" mean?
You use that as a handicapping system. If you have a forty year old competing against a 55 year old and they both do a 1:00:00 time trial. The 55 yr old will win the VTTA handicapped race because his final time will be a better result against standard than the forty year old. It's simple maths. Get the difference between the result from the standard (best difference wins). I always end up sending a prize to Dave Jones of Newbury RC. He's 80 yrs old but still gets a 1:04:00 result (24 mins better than the standard).
I ride a road bike with no carbon, no tri bars, no disk wheel, my times come out very close to the ancient old standard times. It's the old pensioners with their kids having flown the nest and lots of disposable income spent on modern high tech bikes that get the best times in cycling time trials.

Re: Ranger's training thread
That's because the UCI/BCF/CTT have outlawed recumbents for time trialling. Your machine has to be a normal bike, trike, tandem or tandem trike (!).Steve G wrote: Great looking machines, never seen one before, some of my TTs have trikes racing, but nothing like that!

I have no idea what an honest 25 mile time trial would take me to do right now. I'd hate to think. Even in my youth I was never that good at individual time trials, especially if there was a head wind. I used to do a 25 mile TT on a hilly course 30 years or so ago and I used to come close to the hour but never could break the hour. We just used road bikes with 36 spoked wheels, no aero positioning, etc. so I might have had a better chance if the equipment had been better. Yes, let's blame the equipment rather than my lack of leg strength.
Oh, I forgot what thread this is: Wait, I know why I couldn't break the hour. It was because I wasn't fully sharpened and trained and I did those time trials without preparing. But now I know how to cycle so as soon as I do my distance training and sharpening I'm sure I'll break the hour.

Yes, I know you're taking a detour .. w/all this talk about biking on an erg thread, no less...ranger wrote: What does "age group standard" mean?
Tsk, tsk!! You should be ashamed
There is a new (2011 ranking) 55-59 lwt 5k "age group standard" on the erg as of this evening:
17:56.4 done at a rate of 28 spm in Hartland, Vermont...
Now are you going to let a washed up guy who's scared of you show you up?
... and I spent most of the day picking field stone and building a retaining wall...

Nice 5k Mike. If I'm not mistaken, ranger plans to pull this pace for a full marathon at low rate very soon at UT2 HR. He'll never race a 5k and post results here, but maybe he would be willing to pull a 5k at the exact same pace (whatever rate he wants), and show a screenshot of 500m splits with HR data. Should be no more than a simple warmup for the rest of his huge erging day. Odds we see this screenshot or any other? Mike,
Great row! That's the fastest 5k IND_V time EVER for the 55-59 age group. More impressive is the 28 spm.
Congrats!

My OTW target rate in the 1x for the upcoming Head of the Charles is 28 spm... The distance of the HOCR is 4800m
All my training since the second week of August is geared towards doing well in that event.
So... this workout is right up my alley, STS (so 2 speak).
From looking at your times I'd say that you're well on your way to sub 18 yourself. Best of rowing to you.
