I think you've demonstrated pretty clearly that the fact that you make reservations and travel to BIRC is no guarantee that you'll actually row. Talk about chicken shit. That would seem to be the definition. Why risk making the investment to compete against you when you're so unreliable?ranger wrote:mikvan52 wrote:Rich:

Will you go to Boston regardless of whether you get the free ride from C2 or not? That was really lame when you wouldn't go last year. Now you are going to BIRC on your own dollar... more expensive... inconsistent with your no show at Crash-B last year...
I am reminded of part of a speech in As You Like It about the stages of a man's life.
To me "the sixth age" equates to you in your sixties:
"The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound."
Your tenor has turned a "childish treble" recently... It used to be somewhat more manly and convinced some. Now, it seems, you can no longer even convince yourself with your shrill brags and taunts.
All the while, your logic of failed rhetoric slips and skids towards a precipice of your own design.
My advice to you is to prepare and perform..before it is too late... All would respect you for that small thing.
No response.

He does have a new boat, the analogy being that you can buy Roger Federer's racket but not his balls. It should be renamed:
The "Lying Dutchman."

"Dead October" (after Tom Clancy)
USS "Reluctant" (after Mr. Roberts)
"Naught Or Less" (after Jules Verne)

So you have not yet done a sharpening piece, but are definitely sharpening - I assume then that you're doing free-form sharpening, based on individual strokes.ranger wrote: I am now sharpening, which will lead to other pieces that show my potential.
Next question: Do you have an estimate for when you'll do a defined piece that has the sort of predictive value you seem to place on these things?
Re: Ranger's training thread
No, not individual strokes, but yes, not "pieces" yet, either.PaulH wrote:So you have not yet done a sharpening piece, but are definitely sharpening - I assume then that you're doing free-form sharpening, based on individual strokes.
I am drilling on rhythms, in particular, the 3-to-1 ratio that I am using for distance rowing and 2-to-1 ratio that I am going to use for racing.
This is going _very_ well.
I am really catching the swing of these rhythmic forms.
The former is in 4/4 time; the latter, 3/4.
I do the leg drive on a one-pulse upbeat and the arm pull on the downbeat in each measure.
I also give the recovery of my arms and back one pulse.
Then the rest is slide control with the legs.
and-ONE-and-two-and-three-and-four
and-ONE-and-two-and-three
Great stuff.
If you get this music playing in your head and coordinate it with your movement, you can just relax and sing along.
Naw.PaulH wrote: Next question: Do you have an estimate for when you'll do a defined piece that has the sort of predictive value you seem to place on these things?
That doesn't really matter much. But I suspect it will just start happening naturally.
BTW, relative to my peers (other quasi-60s lwts), this is _very_ fast rowing.
The 3-to-1 ratio is 1:44 pace; the 2-to-1 ratio, 1:33.
Rate fluctuates a bit, depending on the tempo I use to beat out the meter.
The 3-to-1 ratio is 25-27 spm; the 2-to-1 ratio is 32-34 spm.
So the former is my base pace, my stroke for distance trials (of all sorts).
The latter is my stroke for racing.
The 3-to-1 ratio is two seconds per 500m faster than the 60s lwt hammer pulled for 2K at WIRC 2010. It is right around the pace of Brian Bailey's 60s lwt 5K WR.
The 2-to-1 ratio is about what the 50s hwt hammer pulled for 2K at WIRC 2010. It is about as fast as any 60s lwt can row for 500m.

"Pretty clearly?"becz wrote:I think you've demonstrated pretty clearly that the fact that you make reservations and travel to BIRC is no guarantee that you'll actually row.
No, one game does not a season make.
Choosing not to row once, while choosing to row forty times or so, does not show "pretty clearly" that I will go to BIRC but not row.
In 2004, I didn't row at BIRC because I was just starting to change my techique and was still pretty confused about it.
In a somewhat better state of mind, but still pretty confused about it, I then went back to BIRC in 2006 and won gold, setting the 55s lwt championship record, which still stands. No one since has gotten anywhere near it.
My goal this year at BIRC is to beat my own 55s lwt championship record by 20 seconds or so.
That would also beat Rocket Roy's 55s lwt WR by 20 seconds or so.
Why?
My work on technique is done.
I am now clear as a bell about it.
I am now pulling 12.5 SPI at low drag (118 df.).
That's _spectacular_ stuff for a quasi-60s lwt.
At BIRC, if I can lock into my 2-to-1 ratio, sing along for six minutes, and then kick, I'll pull at least 6:20.

Re: Ranger's training thread
At low drag (118 df.), rowing well, my relaxed distance stroke at 25 spm is now a full 3 SPI better than it used to be back in 2002-2003, when I rowed poorly at high drag, 12.5 SPI rather than 9.5 SPI, even though the level of effort is the same.
At 25 spm, 3 SPI is 75 watts.
At moderate paces, 75 watts can be worth as much as a dozen seconds per 500m.
For instance, the difference between 2:00 pace and 1:48 pace is about 75 watts.
Who says that technique OTErg doesn't matter?
Even OTErg, technique matters a _ton_.
