After the first 7 days of the challenge, I've lost 7.4 lbs. My body feels broken, so I'm going to go a little lighter the next 7 days including going out of town this weekend. I'm very grateful for this opportunity to compete in this challenge. It's such great motivation to try to keep up with my teamates. If there's one thing I learned from athletics and boot camp, it's that when you look to your left and right and see your teemmates pushing themselves, you can push yourself just a little bit harder. While I can't see the determination in your eyes or the sweat rolling down your brow, I can see the meters you row and understand how much effort goes into each stroke.

I dont' know about the rest of you, but the days you see me with 20k meters it wasn't from one sitting. I got on the machine 6 times yesterday for a total of 21k. It's amazing how 10, 20, or 30 minutes at a time will add up so quickly over a day.

What a great intro into today's stats, Brett! The fall challenge does tend to bring out the beasties - and the best we can do. It's a long challenge - and it's always good to pace yourself based on what feels okay, and what other things you have to balance in your world. We definitely want all members of the team to be able to participate as fully as possible in each of the challenges - so step away from the erg when needed! And hydrate.....hydrate....hydrate. Electrolytes are your friends!

That said, this is indeed the venue where each of us does truly understand how much effort it takes to go the distance. Family, friends and co-workers may shake their heads in amazement at both the time on the erg, and the distances we all row (not to mention "what is it about this challenge stuff, anyway - didn't you already row today?!") - it takes another rower to understand and appreciate what it took to get those accomplishments.

Fantastic job, Brett! That is a great way to tackle it, especially if weight loss is your goal. Your metabolism will keep on burning up calories awhile after each row. You might also be interested to view some technique videos if you haven't already done so. I learned a lot from doing that, and it made a big difference in my whole rowing experience (not to mention producing more meters for my efforts.)

Thanks for the encouragement. I just watched the technique video again yesterday. Also, I read some more of the training guide. It seems like I pick up something new each time. Part of the reason I'm so sore today is because I was trying to explode on the drive a little harder and and slowing down my release. I really increased my pace without giving up too much stamina, but my quads are pretty sore today. I think a good stretch might make me feel a little better. I think I'll do that right now.

Jan, I've been looking to see when we'll get to the moon and it looks like we could be there by March 19, 2011.

You've been using the average distance to the moon as our goal (384,000 km), but we should 'plan' to arrive at the moon during a lunar perigee. The average lunar perigee for 2011 is 361,561 km. The smallest lunar perigee occurs on March 19 and is 356,577 km. This is 178 days from now and 37,470 km more than our current total.

If we average 210.5 km/day we will reach the moon on March 19, 2011! Our current average is 209 km/day (30,346 km/145 days=209 km/day). I'll recalculate after the Fall Team Challenge!

I just thought you'd like to know we'll probably get to the moon during the current 2011 rowing season.

:D

BTW, here is a Lunar Perigee and Apogee Calculator: http://www.fourmilab.ch/earthview/pacalc.html

. . . around the surface of the moon is 10921 km

. . . or we could do victory laps across the Sea of Tranquility (873 km across)

You're right, Leaky, we'd need to visit more than one of the Moon's "seas" to defend our LUNA-TIC name. B)

Some lunar features to consider in a LUNA-TIC victory lap:

Sea of Cold . . . . . . . . Ocean of Storms . . . . . Sea of Rains
Bay of Rainbows . . . . . Sea of Sernity . . . . . . .Humboldt's Sea
Sea of Crises . . . . . . . Sea of Islands . . . . . . .Copernicus
Seething Bay . . . . . . . Sea of Clouds . . . . . . . Known Sea
Bay of Roughness . . . . Sea of Nectar . . . . . . . Sea of Moisture
Lake of Excellence

and the craters on the 'dark side' of the moon

and maybe a tour of the landing sites of "previous" spacecraft :D

AJ and Kona2 - When we get to the moon, I'm off the ship for awhile. You'll see me cruising the shoreline of the Sea of Tranquility by myself in my solo canoe. It's just meant to be, with a name like that. But I may need a royalex boat if It's a rock garden...
