This is the historical event that is on the verge of happening:

Rowing well is 13 SPI for lightweights, 16 SPI for heavyweights.

No 60s erger has ever rowed well at low drag (118 df.).

No 50s erger has ever rowed well at low drag (118 df.).

A few 40s ergers have rowed well at low drag (118 df.), but I'm not sure any of them are rowing at the moment.

Elite 20s and 30s ergers row well, but all of the other 20s and 30s ergers thrashing around out there don't.

I am a lightweight.

I now row well (13 SPI) at low drag (118 df.).

I am just a couple of months shy of 60.

As I mentioned, I already biked with a power meter and out on the road in order to compare.

What have you ever ridden with a power meter? A speedometer is not equivalent!
In a gym.

Clearly, it is my racing cadence. Not unless/until you race with it....

Easy as pie rhythmically.Let's see what kind of cook you are.

Just two pulses for the drive, an upbeat and a downbeat, in a 4-beat, 8-pulse measure. Assuming equal-duration pulses, that would be a 1:3 drive:recovery ratio, NOT the 3-to-1 you keep announcing it bassackwards as.

and-ONE--//--and-TWO-and-THREE-and-FOUR- So you CAN actually count your toes....

Recovery of the arms and back also gets a pulse. Careful! Don't sit at the finish....

Then, it's rest, rest, rest, rest, rest, floating down the slide for the next catch. Don't you mean, next break?

Wonderfully relaxing affair, given the high rate and pace. True, there are the breaks every 3 strokes...

At 11 SPI, this cadence has me going 1:36. Bassackwards - spi is an artifact of pace/rating and not a cause; at 1:36 r36 you're indeed achieving 11 spi.

At 12 SPI, I go 1:34 and hit my 2K target. No; and 1:34 pace r36 is 421.4w/36 spm = 11.7 spi.

At 13 SPI, I am going 1:32, scary fast. Bassackwards again. Moreover 1:32 r36 is 449.5w/36 spm = 12.5 spi.

Lots of 36 spm for the next six months.

Time to set the grooves. At the tone, your biological clock will be a quarter past geezer. Moreover it's been a digital-music world since, oh, I dunno, about the last time you actually did a timed workout piece.

ranger
Of course, at 36 spm a 1:3 drive:recovery ratio implies a drive duration of ~0.42 seconds. What happened to your "my drive is .55 seconds long" euphoria from yesterday? You are a muppet's muppet's muppet: if you're keeping that 0.55-second drive at 36 spm -- a very big if -- you're in a 1:2 ratio.

I'd be careful coming out with garbage like this Prof. You're gonna have to think of a mighty good excuse when either:

a) you don't show up to your erg at BIRC or
b) you row a 6:forty-something or
c) You repeatedly handle down on your way to a 7:04 or similar.

My money's on c).

Whilst I'm here, do you have anything to say in response to Byron's post? Does it make you feel ashamed to see your frequent and repeated lies quoted in front of you?

Give or take a bit, this cadence at 36 spm is what Graham Watt and Paul Siebach use, but I suspect at a somewhat higher drag, and they only get 11 SPI out of it.

I will pull _at least_ 12 SPI.

I might pull 13.

Heck no.

But I sure would be ashamed if I were a nay-sayer like you.

Nay-sayers are vermin.

We should all stock up on some nice potent rat poison and get rid of them.

If I get on the beat at 36 spm, I am faster with my arms and my recoveries.

My drive shortens to .42 seconds.

I'll post a PM4 force curve of the stroke tomorrow morning.

You can measure it for us.

It is quite a bit shorter in duration than the one you measured to be .55 seconds.

I hate to break it to you, but the time axis on the PM display extends for 1.2 seconds. Here's your stroke:

1) Within the limits of monitor resolution, you're still not up to the top of the display. You're one pixel block shy. I make that ~130 kgs handle force, not 135.

2) You've "achieved" this "miracle" of force production mainly by contracting your drive duration. Within the limits of monitor resolution, it looks as though you're at 0.55 seconds in this screenshot.

If your force contour has a high peak force and a brief duration, more and more increments of time are done at high force.

There is less time wasted on low force.

The curve isn't rectangular, but if a peak force of 130 kg.F is achieved almost instantaneously and the drive duration is shortened to .4 seconds, well, ...

In this curve, only a quarter or so of the duration of the drive is spent at a force of 80 kgF and below.

50% of the duration of the drive is spent at 100 kgF and above.

A third of the duration of the drive is spent at 120 kgF and above.

20% of the duration of the drive is spent at 130 kgF.

You might get it, you might not.
I hope Rich at least goes out at 1:39 pace... then I expect him to fade to get his regular 6:4x 2k performance..

Psychologically, Rich has given up anyway... he already sees himself as 60... This indicates a lack of commitment/resolve to even try to break Roy's record... He'll settle for an attempt on Brian bailey's record in 2011... (yawn)

As for ranger-watch this week:
So little time to BIRC... and no open rate 500m (?)... Wow...
Rich has folded his hand, cashed in his chips, and is headed for the turnstiles...

I wonder about the promised Grand River Wednesday workout (tomorrow's)... Bet that's cancelled too...

Mike--

At BIRC 2010, I'll race (OTErg) at 36 spm.

3-to-1 ratio.

118 df.

12 SPI
