the record for rowing the atlantic via the northern atlantic route set in 1896, referenced by jim, has been broken. 4 guys rowing 2 hours on - 2 hours off for 44 days.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-10826583

capsized twice, 40 foot waves, but an amazing boat - very high-tech.

but this also makes you even more amazed at the 1896 crossing: 2 guys in an oak boat, sharing a pair of mittens! i'm going to have to read that book jim.

I don't really see how they can claim that as much of a record. If there had been only two in the crew, yes, but even two in a modern boat have enormous advantages over the men that made the original trip. A couple of man hours per day working the desalinization pump is a lot easier than having to carry all the necessary fresh water. In fact, they may have been able to do it all with solar power cells.

I don't mean to detract from their accomplishment, which is certainly impressive, but I would not call it a record.

Joe and Bob,
After reading the story, I am NOT going to recognize it as a record  Really, there are 4 guys instead of 2 so it isn't even in the same class. Please read "Daring The Sea" and you will see how George and Frank achieved their feat. They were amazing and suffered intensely , but were men of their times. And the sad part is they received none of the recognition they thought they might and were forgotten by almost everyone.
Thanks for the article Joe, it was interesting. And I am glad it brings attention once again to George Harbo and Frank Samuelsen.

Yay for a new challenge! Britt and I are back from a mosquito-ridden but fun and exciting backpacking trip to Wisconsin. It's a good thing the Dog Days starts at 20K for the week and not higher. I'll probably get working on my 20K on Wednesday morning, giving myself a couple recovery days. Lots of hiking makes for one sore Karen.

Glad you and Britt had a nice trip to the dairy state. Why do you think mosquitos are so bad in the north? When I went to upper Michigan , I had to jump in Lake Superior , I was being "bugged" so bad. Bobbie had nary a bite.
WheN I visited my cousins in Alaska, I came home looking like I had a tropical disease. Anyone know why they are so bad up there?

I had to go Googling your question, Jim, and the answer... if there is one... seems complicated. Seems lots of factors come into play on mosquito population, from temperature and weather to water proximity and natural predators. Apparently I need to find camping spots with lots of dragonflies and bats to keep the mosquito population in check. One site suggested the mosquitos up north are more aggressive because their "season" is shorter. Not sure I buy that, but don't have a better answer either.
