Greg,
Congratulations! It is definitely an accomplishment to finish a marathon, let alone in under 3 h.

Sincerely,

Hi Bob,
Thanks for your reply. I agree the 30 min interval for hydration is too frequent. I think I was mostly trying to give myself some intermediate milestones to break up the time. Next time I think I'll recruit someone to visit every 30 minutes and change the entertainment as a way to mark time. The second hour just seemed soooo looong.

I think next one I will have to be much more attentive to stroke rate. It seemed like my stroke rate wanted to climb too hig (like 26 or 27) and my the stroke power would go down. Maybe if I looked at it as a big long L4 with prescribed rates and splits, it would be more mentally engaging.

I'm definitely going to try to do a marathon a couple times a year.

Long time since I last logged in... Today went to the gym to row my first 60' this season and managed to push the split below 1:57. Thus my new PB for 60' is now: 15,403m.

PB for strapless and barefoot 30' 8051m' sr 25 df 118. First time I tried going barefoot, and I felt really strong. Started getting a blister on right heal with 10 minutes to go but I toughed it out.

I've got lots of PB this week since this was my first week ever rowing! I did a 1k, 6k, 30', and a 10k that I did this morning.

My first 1k was 3:44.0
My first 6k was 24:23.3
My first 10k was 41:11.0
My second 30' was 7,053m, up from 6,431 on my first one

Obviously not much to brag about, but I'm focusing on my technique and I think my numbers are good for having never done this before. I am loving this workout way more than any other form of cardio I have ever done, AND it doesn't bother my knees at all :D

I'd like to get numbers recorded for all the milestones and then work on bringing specific ones down as I go. I think I'll do a couple of 500m tomorrow and a 5k. I'll try a 4' mark on Monday, and I'd like to work up to a half marathon by the end of next week.

Woody, those are pretty solid numbers for being new to it. Also, impressive for someone from ND... Yuck.

First ever 6k this morning! Didn't feel that great going into it, legs were sore and wasn't very energetic, but since it's my first 6k no matter what happened I was going to PR.

Result:
6000m 22:37 1:53.1avg 26spm MaxHR: 194

Piece actually went pretty well. For the first 500m-1000m I went faster than I had intended, but with all the adrenaline surging I couldn't help it. My goal pace had been a 1:54, but the only way I could hit that was by going at a 22. So the first 1000m was around a 1:52avg. For a while after that I held steady 1:52-1:54. With about 2500m to go it started to get really hard. During the last 2k I could feel my legs giving out, so I upped the stroke rating from 24-25 to 26-27. This helped a lot. At this point however my splits were hovering around 1:54-1:56. I was just trying to hold on. Tried to sprint the last 300m, brought the rating up to a 34 or so and just tried to get in as many strokes as possible. Split went down a bit, heart rate went up a little bit.

Forgot to record splits, so don't have exact data.

Got my heart rate monitor yesterday and was glad to use it today. However, forgot to reset it after warm up so it has my average heart rate at 155, which I would guess is about 20 beats or so low.

edit: also weighed myself after. Down to 164! IE officially a lightweight again.

6562m for a 30' piece. PB? - Well, that's needs a bit of qualification. After a few years, older ergers don't get PBs any more, so I will have to modify it to SB for seasonal. Also, to be grammatically correct, I can't call it a seasonal best, it is only the 2nd 30' that I have done this season - so it will have to be seasonal better, but that is still an SB.

I had hopes of using the distance for this piece, plus (conservatively) interpolated times for the shorter distance pieces, to get an improved Nonathlon score. The 500m and 1k times were just a tad worse, but the 2, 5, and 6ks were all significantly better. (I started the earlier 30' piece with a fast pace in the first minute split - this second one was pretty much negative splitting all the way.)

Unfortunately, something went haywire with my nonathlon connection. I get a message that my id is invalid. Never had this happen before. I have sent an e-mail to nonathlon to find out what went wrong, so I will just have to wait for an answer.

Damn! Good work, you're relentlessly hacking away at that 6k, looks like you'll be sub 21 in a couple of weeks.

first time posting on this forum, figured bragging about a PB is a good way to start. B)

just started rowing in June and got my very own Model D last month.

new 5K PB yesterday 18:04.2.

1K splits
3:38.7 sr 27
3:36.9 sr 28
3:36.3 sr 28
3:36.5 sr 29
3:35.8 sr 29
df 136

a big drop from previous best (18:34) thanks to all the meters from the Fall Challenge.
