Andreas,

I am sorry that I couldn't join you for the marathon. The family had a nice weekend camping by a beautiful lake and now my legs are worn out from trial biking and my arms are worn out from paddling. (There isn't much else to do when you are camping!)

1.50 is a good pace. I don't know if I can do it anymore. Old age is setting in. I would like to do another marathon when it is cooler here. Maybe in December after you clean up at BIRC? You will certainly go faster if you do it at sea level.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

I need to do a marathon too for punishment. We should do it before December though --- in a matter of weeks.

I have now degenerated to such a degree that I have no willpower anymore.
I need the stimulation of a race to even get from one end to the other.

At the day of the marathon I went to the fitness center to row one myself.
I started off with 1:49 but was under significant stress at 12K already.
This was very confusing as just before the taper I rowed 23K at 1:49 with no problems. I then started dropping the pace, to no avail, it was still hard, at 22K I gave up.

This was unsettling and after one day of rest I was at it again. This time fortified with my MP3 player and lower expectations about the pace, the target is now 1:52.5 (8K in half an hour). The player is set on random replay.

First song: "Down in the Hole" by the Rolling Stones. OK.

I knew I had to split faster than 1:52 in the beginning because of the inevitable slowdown. "Down in the hole" again. I am moving along at 1:51 - 1:52 but at the half the pace has decayed to 1:52 even.

"Down in the Hole" has come up at almost every other selection. I am becoming preoccupied with this supernatural phenomenon and its hidden significance. It's getting harder. I am reaching 30K splitting 1:52.8. This is still faster than at my PB where I was splitting 1:54.5 at his point. However disappointment is setting in anyways and sure enough "Down in the Hole" is here again.

It's getting slightly hard and knowing that it will get much harder soon is enough to finish me off again. This is a bad situation.

On the other hand there are quite a few very capable rowers who did not show at all such as Jaap, Hennie, the Canoeist, Pieter, ...

I am calling to all such to learn if you are willing and able to participate in a marathon any time in the next three weeks. I will have to drive 500 miles to fetch my connection cable but am willing to do so.
I probably can't do a marathon until November. I am rowing on the water 3 - 4 days a week and am busy with the kids soccer games on the weekends. I should be in fair shape in November though. Hopefully all this rowing on the water at 5 am helps my stroke a bit.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

The plug that goes into the PM3 looks very much like the one on my printer cable.

Might be worth emailing C2 before driving that far!

HTH, Holm

I found out that I can drink from squeeze bottles while still rowing with both hands (2:10 pace). The important thing is that the bottle has to be as THIN as possible so you can hold both it and the handle. Mine aren't thin enough but I will look for some thinner ones. I need about 5 strokes to drink (one sip per stroke) so not much loss of time.
Today I noticed that the marathon on 10/29 is full.
This fits me well since I am not very motivated to do another one and don't believe
I can improve significantly on my current time.
Also 8:00 AM (local) is a little early for me.

Due to endurance rowing I have lost so much speed I don't think I can go under
6:34 for 2K at the moment. This is bad since the Austrian championships are in early January.

In any case I wish all of you luck, success and fun!

Due to speed work i have lost a lot of endurance, however I was considering signing up for this FM, luckily I see it is now full so temptation taken away, thank goodness
