What a great clip, that's even funnier than Rangers posts.
Talk about motivation to do a sub 7 2K, just put on on some tracks where the train runs every 7 minutes !

Nope.mikvan52 wrote:It seems I'm a little faster than you?... What do you think?
Just rowing along in your everyday distance rowing, you don't do any better than 2:04 @ 26 spm, as I was doing today in my Fluid, and will be doing all summer long.
Then the issue becomes: How high can you lift the rate (e.g., over 5K)?
When I am fully trained up for it and racing, I think I'll be able to rate 30 spm over 5K.
It appears that you can't lift the rate at all.

Yes, I expect you are right about this.mikvan52 wrote: I...am fully trained. Any advances I can make in speed will have to be with form that must be developed primarily on the water.
C'est dommage.
Good luck with it.

Re: Ranger's training thread
Last year, Dietz won the Veterans race at the Head of the Charles at 2:06 pace.
Unadjusted, Spousta was second at 2:10 pace.
No one else did better than 2:13 pace.
So, now that I have good equipment, my paces and rates (2:04 @ 26 spm) OTW are entirely competitive with the best OTW rowers my age.
Delighted about that.
I'll try to hold as close to 26 spm as I can in my day to day OTW rowing this summer.
Love the new boat.
The Fluid is a torpedo!

Re: Ranger's training thread
2:04 @ 26 spm is 19 seconds per 500m from 1:45 @ 26 spm (11.5 SPI), which I was doing this morning on the erg.

So you're ready to race! Great, let's see you race then.
Re: Ranger's training thread
That clip reminds me of the day that I drove over to Death Valley to try to get in a 30' PB attempt at a sea level venue. It was early Spring, but it was already quite warm, so I needed a shady spot. No trees anywhere of course, so I had to use the shade of buildings. Unfortunately, it was still high season for tourists and I was unable to find a spot that was reasonably isolated from gawkers and/or interruptors, so I gave up and drove home.mikvan52 wrote:

I'll do a round of head races this fall, as I planned to do last fall, but didn't.
I am certainly better equipped to race now that I have my Fluid.
Then I will try my hand at some sprint races next year, and if I can get entered, etc., the Veterans race at the Head of the Charles.
I turn 60 years old on Jan. 25th, 2011.

I like this progression of activities, but ideally, I would like to double the time/distance, getting to two hours of each.ranger wrote:As with other summers over the last seven years, this morning I did an hour on the erg, an hour on my bike, and an hour OTW.
I will work toward that this summer.

I think that times in the older age divisions will stabilize when they approach the norm of decline with age--about a second a year over 2K after 20.
That means a sub-7 2K for an 80s lightweight; 6:35 for an 80s hwt.
With comparable times at other distances, in line with this 2K.
I'll have to wait 20 years, but when I get there, I'll see if I can oblige.

That has got to be a classic non-sequitur (i.e. ranger's, not hjs's). What do declining 2k scores have to do with nonathlon anomalies?hjs wrote:In other words, when hell freezes over.ranger wrote:Not hard to figure.Bob S. wrote:Note: Even so, my shitty high altitude 30' time gave me more points than six of my other nonathlon entries including a 2k WR. P.S. I am not in the 80-84 2k category, although I am in the the 80-89 for other events, since they don't go by half decades.
