Hello Team. I'm back from my trip. We had a great time.

I'm still "about to start watching" Hawaii Five-0 ... I have a back-up of Netflix to deal with first. A friend, who goes to Hawaii regularly, buys each season of Five-0 as soon as it's available on DVD ... Amazon sends her an email when the next set is released. She enjoys comparing "that was then" with "this is now" when she's on Oahu, and was happy to share her collection.Toothdoc wrote:Chris, How is the Hawaii 5-0 series going? Where did you find it?

Crew on watch signals wildly that a returning crew member has been eye-spied! Welcome back, Laurie P!
Good rowing day, yesterday - lots of oars in the virtual waters. Three half moons on the horizon of the rowing universe - and Danno blows by the HALF MILLION milestone, and Will S zooms past the THREE-QUARTERS of a MILLION milestone. Well done, gents! Meanwhile, back at one of the southern California training facilities, Gina takes some practice runs at her 5K world ranking - looks like she has taken over the number four spot in the 5K rankings. ...less than 22 seconds separate the accomplishments of the top four rowers in this category....predictions are that Gina will "own" the top ranking in this one soon. You go, girl!
Season meters as of 38/365 = 7,275,407 m
Total meters on the day = 220,342 m
Oars in space (participation) = 38 percent
MILESTONES...Bragging Rights...Celebrations:
500K Dan
Will S, with almost a full moon, puts 40K into the team meter cannister and earns a half moon
Dan, clearly recovering from lefty-ness that was "just not right" for him, rows 37,142 m for a half moon
And Minnie brings in a half moon with another half marathon...
And thanks to everyone who rowed today - stellar meters!

KONA2 - Another successful fishing trip. I seem to be flopping on the dock again. But to answer your inquiries:Kona2 wrote: 14,545 m New paddles at the ready....gear-tweaking.....calendar marked with MANY canoe miles...dreams of next canoe trip..
New paddles - just finishing up one, but I don't think there is enough time for me to use it enough to decide if it should be my primary paddle on the next trip. This one is based on the high cadence voyageur canoe paddles I used last summer and was fairly impressed with when I crewed on a 100 mile trip in a 9 person canoe. It's a fairly radical design with a cupped lower blade as the offset for the small blade area. Hopefully that will give better "water grip/purchase". Once in a while I like to tweak design a little and therefore this paddle will need to prove itself before it becomes a favored paddled. Or I could start an oddball paddle collection....
Gear tweaking: Over the winter I purchased the small but very functional Vital Solhuma wood burning stove (Canadian product). On my recent Missouri trip I used the stove daily in camp and was very impressed. It would boil big pots of water (6 quarts or so) in about 20 minutes. What I do not know is how well this stove will throttle back to fry up a pan of fish to golden brown. I'm going to find that out! So on my upcoming wilderness canoe trip, I plan to take this stove as the primary stove for cooking. (This could change if we get into a dry spell as Parks Canada has already stated that use of any wood burning stoves would not be allowed in a fire ban situation.) This stove has the potential to save at least 3 lbs of weight in my pack just from not having to carry fuel bottles of white gas.

Canoeing calendar - 9 day Quetico adventure starting on Canada Day. This will be just myself and my long time paddling partner (wife) and be a rather modest trip of about 75 miles. It's been 15 years since we've done a long trip alone together, but we've done numerous 4 to 5 day trips alone and yearly long trips, but these have always been with the safety of another canoe or two along. Last time we did a long one alone, she paddled me in to get to the doctor's office with a broken elbow. We both feel great and are really looking forward to this trip. Starting to check out and prepare camping gear and dehydrate meals. I will also be gone for a week in August floating on the lower 80 miles of the Wisconsin River, and in early Sept I have an 8 day Quetico trip scheduled with a friend.

Moose - I always learn something new from your great gear reviews, and your calendar of events - I think the whole team does. I checked out the wood-burning (and whatever else happens to be available!) stove - anything that can boil that much water in 20 minutes - whoa! Legendary trips take a lot of good planning - thanks for sharing (catch and release)!DuluthMoose wrote:KONA2 - Another successful fishing trip.Kona2 wrote: 14,545 m New paddles at the ready....gear-tweaking.....calendar marked with MANY canoe miles...dreams of next canoe trip..

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Thanks guys! Sometimes I get to feeling my world is just a little too far out from the mothership to be writing about it.
BAZzy, I've never seen the eco billy, but I have seen the Irish made kelly kettle in action. They look like Very similar products with a fire chamber surrounded by a water jacket for great heat transfer. The kelly kettle does a great job on boiling 3 to 4 big mugs of hot beverage in just a few minutes. But it is a little on the heavy side to be carrying on your back, takes up considerable volume in a pack and really doesn't nest with anything else, and doesn't do camp cooking chores for more than a couple campers. It's kind of like today's jetboil systems meant for 1 or 2 campers, but without having to lug the fuel bottles. Of course as with anything that burns wood, you have to be tolerant of blackened cook kettles and occasional smoke getting in your eyes.
http://www.kellykettle.com/
What attracted me to the little Vital Solhuma stove was its ability to do cooking chores and heating water for clean up chores for a group of 6 or so campers (bigger pans and kettles). This stove is stable and sturdy and I wouldn't hesitate to put as much as 25 lbs on it. I've found that this stove transfers heat best on wide bottom kettles, something 10" in diameter or even more. I used a cheap, thin walled stainless steel 10 quart stock pot with lid in Missouri, and it was perfect for the task. I have also used a 6" diameter 2 quart enamelware pot on it, but I found the flame extends well beyond the diameter of the pot bottom and heating with this stove became much less efficient with this small pot.
