Erg Fan noise reduction ... ?

Post by jbanditto » May 21st, 2010, 5:22 pm

Question for technically-minded, creative rowers
Anyone knows practical ways to reduce noise from the erg fan during exercise? (Getting padded walls or pulling Erg into parking lot every day are definitely among some back-up options. But more practical advice will be greatly appreciated !!!)
Thanks!

What model are you using? A D or E should not create much noise at all. It's impossible to get rid of the sound because all you hear is the rushing of air. No air means no resistance.

Even a clean, well maintained Model C doesn't make much noise IMO.

You will find that the chain in particular or bad bearings will quickly become more noticalble than the rush of air.

As has been stated, there will always be noise generated by a conventional fan moving air.

I row with a C-Breeze as well and honestly the noise if not a problem if the rower is in good shape.

No doubt it could be reduced using some audio noise cancelling technology !

I'm using D. Noise doesn't bother me at all. But I just moved to a different apartment complex with walls made of cardboard (almost literally).. and my concern is getting regular updates from neighbors on my rowing skills and technique after my practices. :(
That's the only reason I was wondering if there might be any easy practical way to keep sounds down a bit.. just to minimize chances of any local wars in the future

Thanks for getting back on this!
Happy rowing everyone

Noise can be air or structure borne. So wait for the complaints, to see where they come from. If from below, put something soft under the feet. If from next door, short of insulating the walls, you can only box the machine in somehow, but this may cause problems with drag.
