PM3, Polar Interface & Suunto Dual Belt

Post by Mark Poston » May 12th, 2010, 4:33 pm

Hi,
I've just purchased a Suunto T6D and am having problems with the Dual belt maintaining a connection to the PM3 via the Polar interface.
It seems that staying still the connection is better but when rowing the connection is pretty much lost most of the time.
I have the Polar receiver in the documented position but also tried other positions.
Is anyone else having this issue, or can advise on possible solution?
Kind regards
Mark

The Polar receiver is better placed more forward than stated by concept 2, basically in the middle of your stroke.

The range of the Polar Wearlink coded I have is nearly 2 meters or over 6 feet once you have sat on the rower and it has established a connection with a new battery so the receiver postition is not critical.

Test the range by not rowing and just moving away from the receiver, the Suunto belt should have a similar range although you're probably better off with a Polar belt as you would expect the Suunto to work better with a PM4.

The Suunto dual belts are designed to work with their ANT watches and also with all the stock gym equipment that's built for Polar belts. The C2 HRI is always a bit fussy about signal strength and sticking a lump of steel with an aluminium plate between the HR belt and the receiver has never been a good idea (except that it tucks it nicely out of the way of the chain, handle and seat rollers). I've never found the best place but half way up the monitor arm is probably better than under the rail.

Thank you both for the advice. I'll try repositioning it and see how it goes.
I did wonder about the current position under the rower and also a body for the signal to go through!!
Cheers

Do you have a wireless network in your house? I found my router was using Channel 6 (automatic mode select). I set things to manually select the channel and set it to 1 and this improved things so I rarely have problems with my suunto/PM4. I also have a polar RS400 so I wear two chest straps. I need to get a Suunto dual belt someday. I had issues on and off with the Polar also until I changed my router channel. The other thing I found beneficial with the suunto belt is to run it under water to get the strap area where the electrodes are soaking wet.

Polar told me other wireless devices and such can cause issues. It is why they developed the WIND devices but they don't work with the PMs.
