How many "standing" ab-heels, i.e. pikes, can you do? That would be legs stay straight, bring feet to hands, then go all the way horizontal again with the legs straight?
I don't know.

I'll give it a try.

Sure, standing ab-wheels are harder, but not as hard as extension press ups.

I could do 50 of them, I think.

But that would be about it.

I can't do 50 extension press-ups.

25?

If you can row well, I don't think ab-wheels, from the knees or standing, do anything much for you.

If you row well (13 SPI for lightweights, 16 SPI for heavyweights), an hour of two of rowing is harder on your abs than any of this stuff.

Whether you are a lightweight or heavyweight, to row well, you have to explode with your back and core in the middle of the drive and then lay out with you abs at the finish.

Every stroke.

Once every couple of seconds.

If you row 20K, that a couple of thousand reps.

How about reporting back when you do them.

Why would you want to do them, if you can row well?

Rowing well is harder on your abs, and more enjoyable, because it works the whole body, not just your abs.

Rich,

First do them, for at least 3 days in a row, then report back. No more whining please.

Thanks

Hi John,
Now that I've been using the ab-wheel, I realize that 30 pikes is very impressive. A coach told me that coaches who have their rowers do additional core and flexibility exercises see less injuries with their rowers.

Byron,
Thanks. They are definitely firming my abs again, and the ab straps are too.
I've decided to take a couple days off from them for recovery, and then to do them again.
Also I'm planning to be more consistent with moderate calisthenics.
Best regards,
John

Please don't turn this into a thread about Ranger. There already is a thread for that.

Thanks a lot for posting this video and link. I struggle with figuring out a core strength exercise that inspires me. Strong abs are really important to me, as I have other hobbies that require it, but I've never been motivated enough to get behind crunches or sit ups.

I really like the ab wheel. It's the only ab exercise that I've yet found that I can push myself to the point where my gut is sore for the next day (or two). Going from the knees I lose form at about 15 or so, and I do 5-10 sets in a day.

Thanks again.

For some reason, this video especially motivated me to try and improve on this movement.

As I am not anywhere near the capabilities of some others here, I needed to figure out progressions toward improvement.

So, for those of you who may also be seeking to improve in the ab-wheel movements, I would like to share two ideas that have been very helpful to me, as progressions toward full standing wheel roll-outs. (These tips come from http://www.RossTraining.com )

Use a slant board and/or a resistance band.

BTW, I have found that use of these two assistance "devices," set at relatively easy levels of effort to "groove" the movements, thus allowing for higher volume, have made my low back feel the best that it has in years.

Enjoy !

Thanks for the feedback and ideas.

Another way is to make ab strap rings and hang them from the ceiling.
The higher the rings, the easier the exercise, and the longer it can be done continuously.
I think pvc or rubber hose grips would be as good as the rings.

Below is an example of excellent form, with the body being straight and off the floor at extension.

The first guy in the video below is using good form, except his feet are too wide apart.

Here is the 71 year old; excellent, but should keep his arms and body straight through the exercise.

The fellow below has moderately good form is not strong enough to hold them together.

What is this, not 1 good rep ????? not that is matters but this is useless, he should first try to them from his knees. From the feet looks very poor and will injure him.
