Don't you think so, John?
Have you tried 1:24 @ 46 spm?
Yes, I sure do.
Yes, but only managed 2 or 3 strokes at that speed.
My 500 PB (1:39) was ~ 46 spm, and less than 8 mps. I think it was around 6.5 mps.

John--
If you prefer 8 MPS, why don't you like 1:24 @ 46 spm for 500m?
What MPS do you pull @ 46 spm for 500m--and why?

In retrospect I think it was 7.1 mps, as I was taking 7 strokes every 50 meters.
The reason, is that was the highest rating that I could manage at that speed.

By definition, efficient rowing is the way that Ebbesen, Luini, and Stephansen, the WR holding lightweights race.
By definition that is FAST ERGING.
Ranger seems to have a vested interest in redefining commonly used words for his own purposes. There is a lot of very sloppy language and sloppy thought here.
Ranger may be the only person in the world who defines "rowing well" and "effective rowing" in terms of SPI and "efficient rowing" in terms of pace at a give rate. Most rowers don't even consider erging, rowing.

From what I've seen, most rowers consider erging a necessary evil useful for offseason fitness, and none I've ever met think of it as the "be all, end all" much less as a sport unto itself. An erg isn't that much different from a weight machine. Seems to hold no matter how good or bad the rower, erging is erging is offseason training simply to maintain a basic level of fitness. Seems to be a whole lot more for others. I think that makes OTW folks chuckle more than a little bit.

I admire the OTW rowers but I have never given it a go. For me the erg is the "be all, end all" and the best sport I have ever come across.
I saw a number of olympians at BIRC last year and don't recall any of them chuckling.

Oops.
8 SPI.
None of the elite lightweight rowers that you admire pull 8 SPI.
Why?
If they did, even at 40 spm, they'd pull 1:43, not 1:30.

They would chuckle if they heard someone describe themselves as a great rower and the speaker never raced a boat.

Nah.
They would chuckle the most at people who don't believe in training or the ability to learn.
That's the biggest laugher of all.

Nothing that I know of.
Nothing very respectable, anyway, I presume, given that my HR is not yet up to max.
One of these days my heart will respond appropriately and I'll just stroke a 2K right through at 32 spm, rowing well.
When I do, I'll pull sub-6:30.
Then I'll be ready for some hard sharpening.
After some hard sharpening, I will be able to lift the rate to 36 spm.

Ranger you have posted some outstanding times erging--we have no evidence yet that you are a decent rower. You know how to erg, but you are just learning how to row.

That's strange, since I've probably rowed as much as any of them in a day, and have no interest to waste any time boating.
That must be why the U.S. team sucks at the Worlds and Olympics.

Are we allowed to say anything self-deprecating on a braggart's thread?
Aw, what the hell:
When I was coming off my PB season on the erg I got back on the water.
I was very fit and quite "happy with myself"... Trouble was: With every power stroke I took I was sending waves surging away from the sides of my hull. I was suffering from an erging hangover: I was generating watts, but I wasn't "sending the boat".
It's fine to talk simulation of Meters Per Second (MPS) on the erg... but there's no way to be certain you can transfer this simulated virtual speed to actual speed.
I am liking spending more time on slides this year and I am intrigued with the new prototype C2 has introduced (fan below the rail ~ bow side) These two erg set-ups limit "erg-stroking " and do not slow you down

When did you last get 24 seconds from these two things?
