When we doubted you, you scoffed and said that on Wednesday you'd row 6:40 and on Friday you'd row 6:32. Turns out, you did neither and rowed 6:41 on Sunday.ranger wrote:My goal of 6:16 has always been an "ultimate" goal: rowing my best.detlefchef wrote:Of course, there's the old adage; promise short, deliver long.
I never have really put a date of when I might reach it.
So, again, a great time. However, considering that you laughed at those who doubted your ultimate goal and explained how you'd show us we were wrong by achieving these intermediate goals, this rather great time means you came up short.
The greatest erger to ever live still has not reclaimed the WR ... what is so impressive here? A 6:30 was going to be easy ... do it with one hand behind his back easy.detlefchef wrote:When we doubted you, you scoffed and said that on Wednesday you'd row 6:40 and on Friday you'd row 6:32. Thanks for coming up with a metric of infinitesimal significance.
Do you know how many 59 year old lwts post 2k times in the rankings?
In 2009 there were 19
So far this year: a whopping 11..
This years significant erg racing is over too... 'Racing' : as in facing your competition in your age group: BIRC, WIRC, EIRC, satellite races where you race more than the clock..
It interesting that in this season one of ranger's words, "unprecedented", is setting over the horizon...
Here is my definition of:
" unprecedented "
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/7474/lwtrec2k.png
... a world record in any of these narrow age groups (listed in the link).
The bottom line is Rich & I have been trying for a WR in the 55-59 lwt age group. Roy Brook has it. My money is now on Roy retaining it.... for a least 2 years...
and, The truth of the matter (?):
before too long Rich and I will be happy with matching lwt 12 year old, Callum Jones', 2k WR

Nothing is very impressive yet, except that, in the history of the sport, no one my age and weight has ever rowed as fast as I did today.
The "promise" is still the issue.
So let's see what happens over the next 10 weeks.
The next week,
and the next,
and the next,
and the next,
and the next,
and the next,
and the next,
and the next,
and the next,
and the next.
I am now training to race.
Over the next two weeks, I think I will gain 15 seconds over 2K.
After that, I think I will gain about 2 seconds per week over 2K.
Game on!
I am just starting to do AT, TR, and AN work.
Do you catch the significance of that?
I just rowed faster than anyone my age and weight has ever rowed and I have just started to do AT, TR, and AN work.
Your anaerobic capacities are 20% of a 2K.
For me, 20% of 2K is right around 7 seconds per 500m.
Game on!

No, I am saying that _you_ can't have it both ways.detlefchef wrote:No, I'm saying you can't have it both ways.ranger wrote:So you believe me now, but you didn't before?detlefchef wrote:Couldn't you chalk that up to the fact that your 6:48 was an "easy" effort?
Either you believe me, or not.
If you don't, then fine.
Do what you want--and lose.
If you do, then fine.
Support what I am doing--and win.

You (also) seem to have a penchant for not answering the sense of a point.. Which was: Single age /single weight records for the aged are not significant because so few take part..John Rupp wrote:The Perathon compares 2k times of all ages, the two weight classes, and gender, based on 2k WR's.mikvan52 wrote:John:

Any thought on this?
Also: Since age is (mathematically) an absolute value... 58+1 day should not mean more than 59 -1 day... IOW ... in reality you are not in another group by virtue of a day.
Five yr groupings are bad enough!
The Big OTW events (like the HOCR) don't recognize handicapping by single years until 60+ and there's no hwt/lwt divisions.

I have been doing distance rowing for six months or so, but not to the max (e.g., in trials).PaulH wrote:Seems like ranger is letting his inconsistency slip. He's improved by 7 seconds, he claims, but also claims that the sharpening and hard distance rowing that will get him an extra 25 seconds haven't started yet (despite having earlier claimed that he started sharpening around the start of the year).
So, his rowing improved by 7 seconds without sharpening or distance rowing (still to come), and without improving his base (which he'd already finished). has he, perhaps, changed his headwear to make that improvement?
I have been sharpening for several weeks, but not in an organized way, and not at all to the max.
I haven't done even one distance trial.
I haven't done even one standard sharpening workout--8 x 500, 4 x 1K, 4 x 2K, etc.
I now have 10 weeks of distance trials and hard sharpening before me.
I am at weight (165 lbs.) and rowing well (13 SPI).

Rich: Can you suggest any training that will get rid of "I think" and leave the "I will"?
Why no certainty anymore?
You showed how little certainty there is in training.
You missed your target by a dozen seconds.
Humiliating affair.
Big mouth--not much else.
So far, I am doing quite a bit better than you.
Over the next 10 weeks, we'll see how much better.
