Swiss Rowing Indoors coming up!

Post by Uyam Zenra » January 27th, 2010, 6:43 am

Here it comes, my first big challenge of this year: the Swiss Rowing Indoors 2010!

After roughly 4 months of preparation supervised by an instructor of our academic sports association I’m ready to start for that race on the upcoming saturday. I hope to deliver my quickest 2 km, however, they’ll most probably feel like the longest and will certainly be the most painful. But that’s the price for not passing the finish line as the last.

I know this sounds not that good for a motivation, but it is! Since I have to start in the Open category I’ll have to contest the nations best rowers, which of course are way out of my league. But it’s that or not participating at all… I prefer to participate :). I got hooked to the whole thing more for the preparation experience under competent supervision and the training, just to see how it is to prepare and then participate at the competition. I haven't done anything like this before.
I’ve got my personal goals, from which I actually have already achieved the most during the preparation time. I'll be facing the last one in three days, trying to meet the time I’ve set myself.

Therefore I’ll try to prepare the best I can psychologically for the remaining days, at this point probably the most important bit, there’s not much I can do about my physical fitness any longer.

Get all the details of the event on http://www.rowingindoors.ch

You'll hear back from me on Sunday (I hope ;) )

It's done!

It's done!

The Swiss Rowing Indoors are over. It was a very intereseting experience, since it was the first time I competed in a sport. As said before, I had to start against the best rowers, thus moving in the lower field. The good thing was that it was the most anticipated and the last race of the day and the crowd was accordingly loud. I've even heard a cowbell (yeah, these Swiss people can't leave their hands of these things ;)) and some klaxon noise was also around. Therefore the setting was pretty cool.

I got a great start with a very high rate and an unhealthy low split time ;) I was told that for the first few second and meters I was even on the leaderboard... :P Not for long as you can imagine.
I had to force me down and really struggled to bring down my stroke rate and split down to race level (~ 1:42 @32 spm), but I had to so in order to make it to the finish line!

Once I got the rythm it was alright. Shortly after passing 1k it got really tough to keep up the pace up the the split down. You know how it is, legs beginning to burn and stuff... However, I managed to keep the average split just below 1:42 (which was my personal goal) and achieved my new personal best with

6:47.7.

Therefore I'm quite happy with my result and looking back on the whole experience, the preparation during the last 4 months and the climax this afternoon I'm pretty proud of what I've achieved.

Now, let the on water season begin! :)

Congratulations from me too

What was the altitude at the competition hall? Most of Zurich is about 500m, no?

Ehm, yep more or less. I couldn't say at what altitude the hall is located exactly, but probably something shy from 500m sound about right.

Why do you ask?

Because altitude affects times negatively, and I wasn't completely sure whether Zurich was high enough that C2's altitude correction factor should be applied to times. It's not.
