John Sweitzer, breaking 6:40 for the first time to win the Ice Scraper in the 20-29Hwt division, with 6:39.6 at age 22.

Paul 'Canoeist' Flack (in the red shirt), a three-time Sledgehammer winner in days of yore, placed 2nd in the 50-59 Hwt division with 6:47.9 at age 53. I used this photo because the action shots of him were a bit blurry, and because this photo shows off my raging bull tatoo. Paul's Bridge Street Toys company generously donates the Mini-Sledge and Tackhammer awards every year. He's also a DGG (Damn Good Guy).

When not shooting great videos Chad Goss wins the 40-49 Hwt Ice Scraper with a time of 6:54.8 at age 47. If he can only nail down just when foundational rowing is supposed to be finished and sharpening begins......oh, nevermind.

Rick, Many thanks for a great time and a very well organized event. It was a real treat to meet so many folks who I had only read about. What a great group of really nice people. I look forward to next year and hope to see many of you at the CRASHB's on Valentine's day.

Lisa Doucett, a Cambridge Sports Union teammate of my baby sister Tina, usually tears up the roads as a runner, as well competing in about 5-10 other sports. She usually asks me how Tina is doing when we see each other, I tell 'good, I guess,' then last week she wanted to know if I was going to CRASH-Bs, and I wanted to know if she was coming to Newburyport, and the rest is history. First place in the Women's 50-59 lwt division recording 8:22.1 at age 54.

Chad, Don't shoot yourself in the foot. That's a modification to the machine and technically illegal in some venues. Fortunately for you I am the Grand Poobah of this event and let it slide (so to speak).

Will Haskell of the great state of Maine, taking a break from running and cross-country skiing to win the 40-49 lwt Ice Scraper in a still sub-7 6:55.6 at age 43. He's just bought a new Model D though, so watch out next year!

Dick Henry giving it the full effort to score the 60-69 Hwt Ice Scraper with a time of 6:55.9 at age 62. He credited the new singlet that he had bought just prior to the race. It was so good he wanted to buy another but I'd only had one.

Fred Dickie may occasionally be mistaken for Santa Claus, but never for being a slow guy. His 6:59.1 placed 3rd in the 50-59 Hwt division and was only 2.5 seconds off the 6:56.6 that I watched him row 10 years ago at my first erg race at Cape Cod Community College. He's looking forward to the 1000m race in Manchester, NH in February where his power-lifting experience should make for an even better performance.

Nick Fanaras, mainly a cyclist, used his massive thighs (this photo really doesn't do them justice) to score 2nd place in the 30-39 division with a PB of 7:00.1 at age 33. Nick could probably stand to lose about 3 pounds off each thigh to make lightweight and still have the biggest quads around for anyone less than 300 pounds. He was antsy for the awards ceremony to be done with so that he could get out for a long bike ride.

Gary Passler, demonstrating that yes, 7:07s are so easy that I can do them in my sleep. Note how his right foot doesn't straighten out as much as the left. Just the latest glitch of the 187 or so damaged body parts that the triathlete/runner/swimmer/cyclo-cross/biker has sustained over the years. The 7:07.5 off limited erg training got second here for the 55-year-oldster. Having put himself back together so many times he decided to make his living as a Physiotherapist to help put others back together as well.

Mary van Beuren, of the lightweight erging van Beurens, nailed 2nd place in the 50-59 lwt women's division with 9:17.6 at age 52. She warmed up for her race much as the great Paul Enquist (Gold in the 1984 Olympic double) did, by knitting. She also enjoyed listening to the Lyle Lovett music coming from the back of the store, especially The Road to Ensenada album, and particularly (One-Eyed) Fiona with Lyle's extended holler.

Paul Geoghegan of Merrimac hosted the lightweight van Beurens on Saturday, then brought his own newly lightweighted body to 50-59 lwt division to finish 3rd with a 7:21.4 at age 53. If he can avoid dragging kayaks and damaging his shoulder this summer, as he did last summer, there may be improvement by the 2011 race.

Brent Kubik. Alas, poor Brent. He shows up to the Hard Nock's Gym one morning, minding his own business, and finds himself talked into going to Newburyport and climbing onto an erg for the first time ever. That's Dave Nock himself behind him teaching Brent how to use the erg while on the fly. As early 1:47 pace deteriorated to, um, slower splits, he gamely hung on until the meters counted down to Zero and placed 2nd in the 20-29 Hwt division in 7:22.9 at age 22.
