Woohoo! Congratulations, Andrea, on achieving 3 million lifetime meters! We wish you many more!

Rowing while on a cruise (and NZ is one of my favorite destinations)....do they provide seatbelts during rough seas?

On the wrist issue - remember the erg is more like a scull than a sweep boat.

Sculling (2 oars) - the bar on the Model D is about the same diameter of typical sculling oars. On the drive, the handle should be in your fingers, not your palms. You don't need a death grip on the oars! The wrists should be flat and in alignment with the palms and forearms. Only the fingers grasp the handle.
At the release, the palms grasp the handle and push the oar handle away- mostly with the area between the thumb and forefinger. The fingers release at the same time; again the hands are relaxed.

Sweep (1 oar) - the typical Sweep oar is about 2" in diameter. Each hand operates differently, one pulls, one feathers the blade. The release motion is like wringing a washcloth, one wrist is bent, the other straight. But again, on the drive the oar is held in the fingers and the wrists are straight.

In short, your wrist should be flat and relaxed, try holding the handle mostly with your fingers. And yes, the elbows should flare out. I'd like the handle to rotate like oars do, but I think that would be an engineering nightmare.

On a personal note, I did a 2K time trial last night...8:04.2! I sent off the entry form for the race on 1/24/10. I haven't raced in almost 30 years; so I am a bit nervous. Last year's winning time in my age bracket was 9:09. The winner in the next youngest group was 7:48...but I she won't be in my age bracket until next year!

Yes, Ben is surprising us all. He did two separate one hour rows yesterday to get his whopping meters (all verified by an adult :D )

Jim - Congratulations on Achieving Two Million Meters for this Season! Way to Row!

Gina - I appreciate your point of view on keeping a Concept rower handle true to the dimensions of sculling oars. A rowing simulator and trainer is definitely a Concept's intended use. But I'm kinda out of the picture as far as using my Concept for actual 2K and 4K on the water race sprint training. My focus is my comfort, less blisters, less aches and pains in using a Concept for an hour or more continuous workout to build/maintain my endurance. All I know is what works better for me for dimensions on a pulling grip when the pulling must last for hours and hours. My rant is over. I'll be quiet now, but I just may head off to my workshop and see if I can come up with my concept of a better Concept handle.

And Way to Row on your 2K time Gina!

wrist issue

Bearing in mind that I can't imagine the difference between a scull and a sweep ... I paid attention yesterday to how I hold the erg handle. I think that I'm actually doing what you're recommending. Also, I have callouses on my middle three finger joints, but not where my palms meet my fingers. (Very dainty, my lumberjack hands.)

Great time trial. Where is the race? Too bad that SoCal is so far away from NorCal, I'd love to watch.

Whoa....there are three sets of number pranksters today (this will be a good challenge!).... is one of these a prime number...
Image Very cool, isn't it?! Thanks to photobucket contributor!

Darryl, seeking some outdoor time, mixes it up with some on snow meters in addition to rowing meters. Should have known that our forward facing canoeist would lead us down a new pathway from time to time...Aussies, so far I think water skiing is out in terms of meter calculations...

Season meters as of 256/365 = 81,949,216 m

Total meters on the day = 408,500 m (erg); 4,000 m (snow)

Oars in space (participation) = 30 percent

MILESTONES....Bragging Rights.....Celebrations:

4.7 MM Bart
2.0 MM Jim
900K Mike C
300K Jane

Image Bart with 30,000 m gets a half moon!
Image Barbara with half marathon/moon # 134 stops 2,172 m short of her 4 millionth meter...what a teaser!
Image Tim with half marathon # 26...and back to back half marathons!

FOUR Million Meter Watch:

Barbara with (2,172 m) to go!

TWO Million Meter Watch:

Tracy with (149,488 m) to go! She's cracked the 150K barrier

And thanks to all today's crew for all your meters...however you got them! Each one helps us get closer to the moooooon!

If the callouses are on your fingers, you are holding it correctly. I rowed Starboard Sweep for 3 years...resulting in my right arm being 1" longer than my left! One year rowing on Port didn't help.

The race is in Long Beach, at the Long Beach Rowing Association. The competition includes former Olympians. I told my son, this is like playing HORSE with Magic Johnso - I'm just a bit nervous! Will I start my sprint too early, too late? I have my race plan, I need to stick to it.
