Does the chain tend to get a bit quieter over time...D Model
I picked up 2 used D ergs. One has 285km and the other 87. Both are in pristine condition and are 2008 builds. The one with more kilometres is quieter when the chain is pulled. Do they take a little while to break in and quiet down? I probely wouldn't of noticed it but after rowing on the higher kilometre one for a few weeks prior to purchasing the 87 kilometre one I noticed the difference right away.

They tend to just get noisier with age. Just stripped down my Model C for the first time recently as you need to remove the chain to replace that gold coloured handle bush when it finally falls in half, usually near the end of a PB and proves quite a distraction.
I found that one of the chain pullys had no lubrication on the bearing and was a source of noise. Also cleaned the chain and boiled it in grease, the same stuff designed for motorcycle chains. The one way bearing in the flywheel should also have lubrication and the inside of the cover should be free from dust and fibre build-up. I understand the Model D & E are now quieter than the model C anyway due to the air intake design. Most of the noise is coming from the movement of the air and is therefore unavoidable.
