PM3.... And the cold....

Post by APM » January 7th, 2010, 5:33 am

Good morning,

I keep my Model D, complete with it's PM3 Monitor, inside my garage which has the tendancy to get very, very cold especially during this cold spell that we are experiencing.

Therefore my question is as follows: Does the cold effect the Monitor at all? I have noticed over the past week or two that the Monitor is fading somewhat when erging during extreme cold spells. However it could be the lighting in the garage, or, perhaps, my imagination.

Please help!

The cold will affect the batteries. If you chill a weak battery it will fail.

Other than that the only other thing is to watch out for condensation when things warm up. Make sure the monitor is kept dry, take the batteries out when it's not in use until the ambient temp gets above about +10°C (we had -15°C in Oxon/Hants/Surrey last night). You could wrap the monitor in cling film as long as it's dry now (and you're not going to trap moisture in it).

Have you discovered http://concept2.co.uk/forum where more of the Brits and Europeans hang out?

Hi Citroen, and once again, thank you for getting back to me with an informed answer.

I am glad that if anything, it will be a fault with the batteries and not a wider issue with the Monitor. I will do as you suggest and remove the batteries after use.

And I agree, I was in Surrey yesterday for family reasons and could not believe the amount of snow that you received. It's much warmer up north.... :-)

And thanks for the link. I do occasionally check out the UK Forum, but I do spend the majority of my erg browsing on the US site. I think the semi naked photos of rowers in the top right hand corner of the UK site attracts some strange looks at work....

I've used the AdBlockPlus Firefox add-on to remove that banner image.

Unfortunately, we are not blessed with such a internet browsing option!

If that fairly innocuous banner attracts strange looks, what would it be like if you were looking at the threadbare (and sometimes threadless) thread called "Sporting Babes?"

Cold may also affect the liquid crystal display. I've had LCD wristwatches that get wonky in cold weather. They keep time, but the display fades.

Yes the cold WILL affect the contrast of the LCD display.

The unit should otherwise work okay but you want to avoid any chance of condensation in the unit.
