Yea, I can do these, too, although they are hard on the fingers.Byron Drachman wrote:Jack Lalanne doing some straight arm on-the-fingertips push-ups. In the comments some people warn that attempting this could cause a lower back injury.

I don't like that much.
No problem leveraging with my back, core, and legs on these, though.
Not much need for finger strength in rowing.
If this sport were knitting or eyeball-gouging, though, finger strength could be crucial.

You were NOT on your fingertips and you were NOT fully extended. Not even close to what JL was doing in that video- NOT EVEN CLOSE.ranger wrote:Here are some finger-tip extension press ups.

I am indeed on my fingertips and fully extended in the video.
And I will make weight easily this year.
I now only have to be 14% body fat to make weight.
It's not hard to get to 14% body fat.
That's just not that lean.
Given the quantity of work I do, if I just watch my eating a bit, here and there, I can lose a half pound of fat a day as I am preparing my weight for a competition.

Gosh.
If I pushed myself to the max, I think I might be able to do 20 or 30 of these fingertip thingies.
Do you still think I am not on my fingertips?
Do you still think I am not fully extended?

That was indeed better and I'll admit kind of impressive given your age. Still not quite to JL standards though, and I'm pretty sure you couldn't get close to 20 if you actually do "full" reps. You did about 2 actual full reps in that video, the rest you barely moved vertically. Still it's not an easy thing to do.ranger wrote:Is this clearer?kini62 wrote:You were NOT on your fingertips and you were NOT fully extended. As for your weight- I'm 5'6" and 12% body fat and weigh in at 155lbs. You are 5" taller and bigger through the shoulders and upper back, so I just don't see someone of your size making 165 unless you're severely dehydrated.
Good luck with it.

I was just illustrating that I can do them, not how many I could do or in what form.kini62 wrote:That was indeed better and I'll admit kind of impressive given your age. I have made weight about 25 times now over the last 10 years.
Same body, so same result.
I made weight at all of the five race venues that I went to last year.
I'll probably lose about 10 pounds by the end of January and my first race.
Given the amount of physical work I do, if I watch what I eat, even slightly, I lose weight hand over fist.

Hey, 155 lbs. would be great.PaulH wrote:To clarify then, as you said on Dec 20th that you have no weight to lose (i.e. you're at 165lbs or below, you're planning to race at about 155?betwelcher wrote:I'll probably lose about 10 pounds by the end of January and my first race.
I stood on the scales at 158 lbs. just before WIRC last year.
We'll see how it goes.
Weight is no issue this year.
So I can concentrate on my rowing.
It's time to start some race pace 500s.
I might do those for the first time tomorrow.
Accidentally, I have a great domestic set up for the next two weeks.
No personal or professional commitments.
My three children were all home for Christmas.
But my wife is now down in Illinois helping her father through a hip replacement operation.
My children will be gone tomorrow, back to Grand Rapids, MI, and Minneapolis, MN.
And I will be here by myself for the next two weeks.
My wife doesn't come back until the Jan. 10th.
Hmm.
Good stuff.
I don't go back to teaching until January 7th.

BTW, Merry Christmas
As with most families, I am sure, our tradition has been to buy one or two ornaments each year commemorating some event that year.
Back in 2003, my wife got me a gold rowing seat and a silver scull to commemorate my hammer row and WR at WIRC and the purchase of my Peinert26 1x.
Can you find them?
