At those speeds (on the bike) you could really battle for the World Crown in the Time Trial race next August in Austria.

It is age bracketed like erging.

Get a bike and I'll see ya over there. It's only 20 km and mainly flat, so 25 mins of effort will see you in the winners enclosure.

I doubt any 60s lwt averaged 20K per day on an erg for 10 consecutive years either.

Go figure.

How the fuck would you know? You're not sixty. If I have my wish granted, you won't live that long.

I'm sorry but bloomp is taking this asshole to task. You think "ranger's" responses mature? It's a pleasure to watch a bright young rower flense this insufferable jerk.

Jeeze John, You are taking ranger way too seriously. He's just not worth it. The only reason to read this thread is for the amusement. You will get no information until he races again so you are better off just ignoring him.

I really don't understand why people feel the need to get so personally offensive with such albeit lackluster invective. I've been watching this thread and to some extent Rich's 'relationship' with the C2 forums for awhile now. Honestly, except for some relatively mild abuse directed at Roy, rarely does Rich do anything close to blatantly attack individuals unless he is responding to really offensive and generally pretty juvenile personal attacks, such as those particularly recently from Paul and John Bove. The worst he gets is dismissing people as poor rowers. While of course he doesn't really have any grounds on which to do that, there are a lot of bad, bad rowers, so I'm sure he gets lucky every now and then. I don't recall him ever claiming anyone to be an absolute idiot, moron, retard, dick, jerk, etc., or deranged, psychopathic, etc., let alone wishing death upon anyone else. So why do some people as if they are justified in these truly horrific personal attacks?

Assume anything negative said about Rich's character by anyone is true. Then so what? So he's crazy, a narcissist, a psychopath, a compulsive liar, whatever. That is hardly the end of the world for anybody on this forum. In fact, it has no bearing on anyone's life beyond this forum. Thus the personal attacks are wholly unjustified. So instead, get on with life and piss off, no good ever comes of them.

Next, assume that anything negative said about Rich's character by anyone is not true. I.e., either people are just thinking about these things too much and taking personal offense when it is (usually) not intended, or perhaps Rich just doesn't have the social skills to communicate without offending people - and many people have this problem. Then the people who ruthlessly assault him oftentimes without provocation may take their place as true a**h**s amongst all a******s.

There's this crazy homeless guy always selling the Big Issue magazine on a corner of a main street in Bristol. I don't know that he's crazy, and in fact, I don't know anything about him at all. He tries to get attention by being obnoxious, loud, etc. In all honesty, as bad as it may sound, I find him to be rather annoying. He is ALWAYS there, and I may walk past him more than half a dozen times in one day and thus I get a lot of his unwanted attention. If one day I decided to walk up to him and start relentlessly shouting abuse on par with the things said here, or maybe even started physically accosting him, it probably would be looked down upon in a social and legal sense, because such behavior regardless of the medium is never acceptable.

Personally, I find the insults to be detrimental to my experience of this thread. Seriously people, chill the f**k out.

It is not the end of the world, as you say. However, neither is it the end if he is insulted. You are asking us to live and let live. Why don't you do the same?

ranger is a troll, trolls bring out the worst in everyone (including me).

A troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

If you mean by "stop reacting," stop spouting shit, feeling sorry for yourself, nay-saying, etc., then, sure, you should stop it.

You should have stopped it long ago.
That was his provocation...

Followed by his goal:

Trolls are incredibly fun. I've had the pleasure of mucking with forum trolls for almost ten years now, and while it was confusing at first, it's nice to have a constant state of tension with someone else...

Thanks, I know what a 'troll' is. I'd say these obviously emotionally charged and incredibly offensive personal attacks with little due personal provocation is rather controversial and inflammatory, and in terms of the discussion, pretty extraneous as well as they don't have much to do with rowing. So, who's doing the trolling? This is Rich's thread; you choose to respond or not to what he says.

'Stop being so negative' is a 'provocation' adequate enough to justifiably garner such hurtful and scathing responses? Which team are you batting for, Mr. Corinthians? Try reading two chapters back.

Hi Phil. I'm not sure how far you go back with all this ranger stuff. Maybe you could enlighten us? Is it just his current US postings, his previous UK blog or his earlier 17,000 plus postings on the UK forum since 2002 that eventually got him banned. Or did you read his even earlier stuff on the US forum that was so poorly received he jumped ship to the UK forum?

You need to know your history before you can make sweeping statements. As some clever dick once said "personal attacks are wholly unjustified. So instead, get on with life and piss off"

What does it matter how far back I go? Look at the 'joined: ' date on the left and you should get a pretty good idea. What matters is what is said and done now, not in 2002. Some really clever dick once said that what happened in the past has no bearing on the future. So indeed get on with it, and don't be a twat based off ancient history. What I said regardless is not a 'sweeping' statement. I'm proposing that people behave with the dignity as one would, presumably, demonstrate in person. People tend to think the internet is some other world in which their behavior does not reflect upon them as much as is the case in the real world; wrong.

----^

That is what I'd say if I wanted to have a real and courteous exchange with you. But if I wanted to respond in the manner consistent with the more hostile posts here, this is what I'd say:

Look to your left under my name, you tugger. That's how far I go back. I'll enlighten you alright - you're wrong. Nothing he's said in the recent months of this half of the decade has warranted some of the caustic stuff said against him. Maybe you should pull your head out of your arse and stop living in the past. For all I know, you ARE that annoying crazy homeless guy selling BI that I pass every day on the University Road and Queen's Road intersection by Brown's. So bloody sod off. P.S., for the sake of your dignity, I hope you don't have that queer Bristolian accent. Then myself and the rest of the English-speaking world would only be able to communicate with you via text, such as this, GOD help us.

So, which is more civil? Which do you prefer?

Feel free to say it as you wish, I am sure you would say the same face to face.

History is very important, perfectly reasonable posters degenerate over time with sufficient provocation. Sometimes this can happen fairly quickly.
