Hi Chris,

Not sure this will help, but I had an achilles flare-up for about a year from beginning to run. Mine was a swelling up in the tendon though -- not where it attaches to the heel. Just above where a running shoe comes up to on the back of the foot.

From what I read, ice massage was the recommended treatment -- not just applying ice, but actively rubbing the tendon and area around it. I did that a couple times a day for several weeks and it did help a lot. It finally cleared up.

Good luck!!!

Hi Lisa,

Have iced before and after rowing, seems to help but no big improvement. Strangley does not hurt when I row, but can't strecth the achilles at all or there is a lot of pain.

I think I will have to see Doc, I don't want to make it a more serious problem than it is. :?

Hi Chris,

Did you make any recent adjustments with your foot pads? I've tried several positions to reduce pain in my knees. I don't know which position hurts the heel the most, but once you know what's wrong, maybe you could make an adjustment there.

Since I haven't been rowing for a few weeks, I'm excited to start on Thursday. Just hope the body will let me!

~Linda

Have Dr appt Monday, not sure if I will row challenge or not. It will depend on what he says Monday, will probably row some and see how it feels. Adjusted footstraps on erg but made no difference.

Sorry for so many typos on last message

Chris, this may or may not be appropriate in your case...but, you might want to explore the possibility of laser biostim. Its not easy to find a doc who uses this therapy as insurance reimbursement is usually not a given...this is a fairly new type of treatment that has worked wonders but not mainstream at this point. Just thought I'd mention it.

Good luck!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

I am back after my time out. 1 week turned into 3, but I am back and it feels good to be pulling on the handle again.

9 weeks until the mid-Atlantic sprints. Time to switch between the long pieces and intervals/tempo rows. Should be fun!
