Re: Two Million Meters!
You can do this Gina!
Prediction: You're going to get moon fever when the holiday challenge starts, Gina! As perspective, you've rowed almost DOUBLE what you rowed at this time last year (pretty good return on your rowing investment! ). You also rowed over 100K in last year's challenge. I'll bet you're at 1 MM meters by the end of January.....there is that virtual team challenge that's in there....so ROW Gina ROW! And if you row 7500 m a day.....whoa...you're finished with that FIRST million by end of December....acrewer wrote:Actually, I am trying to climb back up onto the 5k/day board. I fell off when we went on vacation, then got sick, then 10/15 tax season hit. If I was at 5K/day, I'd be at 1 million today....<176,090> is the deficit I need to make up to get back to 5k/day... can I do it by 4/30/10?Gina with (176,090 m) to go! Aiming to end the Holiday Challenge with a cool million?!

Congrats!
BG - Congratulations on 3 Million Meters for this season! Incredible!
Tim - Congratulations on 2 Million Meters for this season! Way to Row!
Gina - You can do it! Go for that 5K / day Listing!
I sold one of my 3 solo canoes yesterday; kind of an off season trade on a quality boat whose defining attributes just didn't match my paddling patterns well. The boat deserved a new owner who's paddling focus is on moving water, and that's where the boat is headed. Now the search begins for a used Swift Osprey in good condition as it's replacement....

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 11.17.09
Swift Osprey....a high prismatic coefficient.....flies over water......yikes, Moose, hull design has more than a bit of math and physics mixed in...and maybe some hobbit with Froude numbers....
Prismatic Coefficient (Cp) is the volume (V) divided by Lpp x Ax. It displays the ratio of the underwater volume of the hull to a rectangular block of the same overall length as the underbody and with cross-sectional area equal to the largest underwater section of the hull. This is used to evaluate the distribution of the volume of the underbody. A low Cp indicates a full mid-section and fine ends, a high Cp indicates a boat with fuller ends. Planing hulls and other highspeed hulls tend towards a higher Cp. Efficient displacement hulls travelling at a low Froude number will tend to have a low Cp.
C_p = \frac {V}{L_{pp} \cdot A_m} (Wikipedia....we couldn't do without it)
Season meters as of 201/365 = 56,621,117 m
Total meters on the day = 241,436 m
Oars in space = 23 percent

Re: Gina - is this the one?
Just a follow up....I talked with the Customer Service people for JL Racing this morning. The gel pads are very portable. They have neoprene underpinnings that keep them in place, but do not stick or have any sticky residue - so they can be used by those who use an erg at the gym. Rowers use them on ergs and in boats. I ordered one!Kona2 wrote:Thanks for that seat saver reference, Gina!

Here's a link to the "jel"pads - made by JL Racing. They also have a sorbothane (sp?) one, but this one seems to be the most popular.

Seat Pads
Kona2 - let us know how you like that seat pad. I have been tempted to get one myself.

Kona2 my understanding is that Froude guy was responsible for a lot of those math and physics numbers on boat hulls. Although I find that all interesting, I find the best metric for boat performance is always how big the operator's smile is when in the boat..... Moose

Gina ... how does this compare to the sore-no-more seat pad, do you know?Kona2 wrote:http://www.jlrowing.com/jelpad.html

Re: Gina - is this the one?
I’ll be following this with some interest….. I don’t usually find the need to use padding on the ERG (maybe I’m not on there long enough, although Tomo is pushing me along! ). However, spending extended time in the kayak (usually find 90/120 minutes is the kick-in point) can produce the ‘pain in the proverbial’.just27 wrote:Gina ... how does this compare to the sore-no-more seat pad, do you know?Kona2 wrote:http://www.jlrowing.com/jelpad.html

I’ve tried various over the years, but found that after extended periods everything feels hard!
So what I usually do these days, and it seems to work with reasonable success, is to regularly (read daily) sit and roll on a tennis ball to take the tightness out of the ‘glutes’ …. Also lots of hamstring stretches after a row and back stretches, lying on your back on a fitness ball (not sure what you call them).
I find that trying to attack the cause will go a long way to resolution……and that isn’t to say the Gel pads aren’t a good idea either…and remember if all else fails…eat Kiba’s soul food, the trusty cupcake, at least it will make you feel better!
Cheers
