8 x 500m (3:30 rest) @ 1:34 will be my first predictive sharpening workout.
That would predict a 6:28 2K.
There will be no 8 x 500m/3:30r results posted this year.
There will be no 2K trial results posted this year.
season 08/09
season 07/08
season 06/07
season 05/06
season 04/05
season 03/04
Season 02/03 he he did erg in that season. From then on it was all talk and lot's and lot's of dnf, dns and many plus 6.50 races
also many blizzards, frozen feet, boozing with his son instead of racing, failed weigh ins etc etc
I think that anything under 6:24 might be safe for quite a while as a 55s lwt WR.
We can expect Paul Siebach to be sub-6:30 when he is 55, but it would be unusual for him to improve from now until then.
As a 55s lwt WR, 6:20 would be safe for at least a couple of decades, perhaps until Eskild turns 55.
As a 55s/60s lwt WRT, 6:16, I think, would stand forever.
It would be the best row in the history of the sport--bar none--an amazing feat.
It would be the equivalent of a sub-6:00 row by a 55s/60s heavyweight.
The 55s hwt WR is 6:18; the 60s hwt WR is 6:24.
The second or so decline with age between the two records is normal.
The 55s lwt WR is 6:38; the 60s lwt WR is 6:42.

No, the 6:29 I pulled in 2006, withuut even doing hard distance rowing and sharpening, was not all talk.hjs wrote:Season 02/03 he Wink he did erg in that season. From then on it was all talk
It showed that I hadn't slowed down at all since 2003, and that in all likeliihood, I was quite a bit better.
A 6:28 at the end of the month this year, before I start hard sharpening, will show the same thing.
Over the period from 2003-2009, on the average, my competition has slowed down 10-20 seconds over 2K.

No, not strange--and last year, not quicker, either.Rocket Roy wrote:Yet strangely still quicker than you.....ranger wrote:

There is nothing strange about investment.
Anyone who is successful invests on a regular basis.
Those who don't invest go broke.
I've been investing in learning how to row.
I haven't been doing any hard distance rowing or hard sharpening.
So, I haven't been training to race.
I've just been working on technique and stroking power, trying to get better.
I get about a dozen seconds over 2K from hard sharpening.
Who knows how much I get from hard distance rowing; that's the essence of the game.
My fitness is always about the same.
But because of my investments over the last five years, my technique is now much better.
How much better?
I think about a dozen seconds over 2K--3 seconds per 500m.
35 watts
1 SPI
I'll now race at 11.5 SPI; I used to race at 10.5 SPI.

I am no longer working on technique.
I am no longer rowing at low rates.
Even OTW, I am keeping the rate up at 28 spm and above.
I am doing four-hour workouts.
I am at weight.
No, not like those years at all.
The opposite.
Nothing to be done now but sharpening and racing.
I'll be sharpening and racing all year long.
I'll do my first head race OTW in Lansing, MI, at the end of October.
I think I'll rate 28 spm the 4K.
Don't know how fast that will turn out, but I'll shoot for something like 2:10.
2:10 pace won the HOCR in the 60s age bracket last year.
Eventually, I think I'll rate 30-32 spm for 5K, both OTW and on the erg.

Us old hands have heard the same story for years now, the 8 X 500 was promised many moons ago to predict a 6.16, it didn't happen then, neither will it this time

No need to pull 1:31 for 8 x 500m (3:30 rest) right now.
I'll shoot for 1:34 to start off.
I'll have six months to inch that down to 1:31, as I bring up my anaerobic capacities.
1:37 for 8 x 500m (3:30 rest) predicts the 60s lwt WR.
1:36 for 8 x 500m (3:30 rest) predicts the 55s lwt WR.
1:33 for 8 x 500m (3:30 rest) predicts the 50s lwt WR.
1:31 for 8 x 500m (3:30 rest) predicts the 40s lwt WR.
1:29 for 8 x 500m (3:30 rest) predicts the 30s lwt WR.
